Some yutz broke the coaching staff down and even added some fidelity with respect to the type of QB they would be looking for. Guess what, he was right.
Its the smartest path.
a. You have a limited time to get him work with the team if they don't get the CBA thing worked out.
b. The team is geared up to support a QB of his caliber. Again a good fit.
c. The whole coaching staff is geared up to support this effort/scheme.
Again, I like the pick, and hindsight being 20/20, now that we know the Deadskins moved back in an effort to take him later, they look sillier than we do IMHO. Dumb deadskins.
I do not care where they take a player if he is your player. If Ponder was the first QB on our board, then so be it. The coaching staff likes him for some reason and that is who we are going with. The next 5 years of this team will be tied to this draft pick. If he bust, the team moves to LA. If he is good, we get a new stadium.
Again, great work by the staff in this regard. I did feel a bit bad for Ponder in that they Spielman mentioned Dalton in his presser. What a yutz.
Start him week 1? Probably not. Regardless of if he starts or not, he will play this year. Which means we will not be in the playoffs. Get ready for another 6-10 season. Just another year we have to be patient and say there is always next year. With a pick like this lets hope the light at the end of the tunnel is coming sooner.
Again, if he is the guy, then he is the guy. We need a quarterback and here he is.
Start him now. Why not. It isn't like we are asking him to come in and run a scheme that is unfamiliar to him. He knows the scheme and most of the verbiage is my guess.
He won't be asked to carry the team. We will still run the ball alot, and mix in high percentage, quick throws to PH and hopefully Rice. Dont' forget, although its not his forte, he can also hit BB deep if he is getting one on one matchups.
In the end, he is stepping onto a team that was in the NFC Championship two years ago, the same one that got to the playoffs with lesser QB talent than Ponder has and also won back to back div championships as well.
Long story short, this is the ultimate TEAM sport. Young Ponder is stepping onto a damn good TEAM. And that TEAM can and will help the kid succeed.
I have no doubt. Many many thanks to my talented friend Jos for the new Sig.

When we drafted Peterson, and everyone was concerned about his injury, and Percy, and everyone was concerned about size and weed. Our later round picks have been mixed, but generally successful for expectations. I am erring on the team's side: they knew they had to have a QB, and they took the best one they could. It wasn't the BPA, but it was the BQBATrying to bring rationale to an irrational site

Course they follow-on question most are asking is why didn't they then take Dalton or even Mallet Head for that matter. Seems alot of us yutz fans had him a bit higher rated than Locker and Ponder. Many many thanks to my talented friend Jos for the new Sig.

Another indication they were working the phones.
Besides, I believe like some here in DC land, the Deadskins wanted him at 16 and possibly even the Phins at 15. Lions pick right after you at 13, so that left one landing spot, 14.
No way they were moving up for Quinn as they probably had a pretty good feeling he was gonna fall to them based on what the teams ahead of them were thinking. Many many thanks to my talented friend Jos for the new Sig.

Re: The Official Christian Ponder ThreadWhile the Vikings could attempt to sign a veteran free agent to play in front of Ponder for a season, there is also is the chance he will step in as the team's starter. Coach Leslie Frazier said Ponder will be competing with Joe Webb and Rhett Bomar for the job, but that's a bit hard to believe
"I want it to still be an open competition with the guys that are on our roster," Frazier said. "It will be those three. What happens with free agency? Who knows? We'll eventually get to that point. But right now it's a competition between those three and we'll line up with the best guy when we get ready to line up against the Chargers [on Sept. 11 in the regular-season opener]."
Spielman acknowledged there was talk of trying to made a trade with Dallas to move up to the ninth pick and get Gabbert.
"I know Jacksonville ended up giving a one and a second-round pick for Blaine," Spielman said. "We weren't going to be able to do that."
Ponder impressed Spielman, Frazier, new offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave and quarterbacks coach Craig Johnson when they spent a day and a half with him last month at a private workout in Tallahassee, Fla.
Spielman also said team doctors put to rest any fears about Ponder's injuries, which included a third-degree separation of his throwing (right) shoulder in 2009 that required season-ending surgery.
Vikings pick: Prize or surprise?
A nice clip in this one as well. Many many thanks to my talented friend Jos for the new Sig.

Re: The Official Christian Ponder Thread
Weighing in late here, but here are my two cents.
1) Ponder is a good QB, who I doubt would have been there when we pick again in the second. QB was our highest need, and I am glad that we go one.
2) Yes, we probably could have traded down and still gotten him. Probably. We tried that last year though, and we missed our target. Given our need, I would rather reach than miss.
See you guys in the preseason with my Ponder jersey on...Zeus wrote:
When are you going to realize that picking out the 20 bad throws this year and ignoring the 300 good ones does not make your point?

Re: The Official Christian Ponder ThreadHere's the thing: The Vikings, who I would fathom to gues are a tad more plugged in to this thing we call the draft than we are, identified QB as their biggest need and were sure of a couple things:
1) They liked Ponder as much as or better than any quarterback in the draft.
2) There were no trade partners to slide down and select Ponder later in the first round, AND they thought that somebody would make a move in front of them to take Ponder if they slid back.
3) If they didn't select Ponder in the first, they were almost positive, based on what they were hearing, that Ponder would be gone by the time the Vikings got to their second round pick.
4) OC Bill Musgrave says that Ponder is the guy that can make his offense go. Not Mallet, not Dalton, not Kaepernick.
Sure, I'm concerned about Ponder's injury history, but the Vikings use these people called...wait for it...doctors. These doctors examine people for overall health and wellness, and they seem to think he's fine.
So here's the thing--We all agree that QB is a need. If the Vikings didn't select a QB in the first round, and Ponder, Mallet, Dalton, and Kaepernick all go off the board, the Vikings who would you wanted the Vikings to take? Ricky Stanzi? Everyone I talk to says Stanzi is a third rounder, but now the Vikes are forced to take him in the second

Obviously that means he is a tough guy and fits the scheme to a T, that is if you like the dink dunk 22 set scheme we were running under the last staff. Many many thanks to my talented friend Jos for the new Sig.
