    Tagliabue seeks new Vikings stadium

BY GREG JOHNSON and BILL WILLIAMSON

    Pioneer Press

MANKATO, Minn. — NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue said finding a way to finance a new stadium for the Vikings remains a high priority for the league.

Tagliabue, who addressed both the Vikings and Chiefs while attending practices on Friday, has visited with Gov. Tim Pawlenty and is pleased that Pawlenty is trying to find ways to finance a stadium.

"We are just going to keep working on that, and taking advantage of what this team is — a meaningful asset opportunity for this state,' Tagliabue said. "We will try to work with the authorities to get a stadium done.'

Tagliabue said he realizes Minnesota taxpayers are reluctant to build a home for a multi-million dollar business but has seen other places get it done. The stadium has been a major issue since Red McCombs bought the team in 1998.

"I have been a bit frustrated... that not as much progress has been made as we had certainly hoped,' Tagliabue said. "We are going to re-double our efforts and try to make certain that this team is here in a new stadium in the near future.'

For the Vikings, it's the same problem.

"There is nothing really new, and we'll wait until the legislative session comes back in,' team vice president Mike Kelly said. "But it gets more acute as time passes. The governor appears to be trying to find an answer, but they have to get a budget deal done. Until they get the business of running the state in order, they are going to have a hard time addressing some side issues.'

Rules emphasis: The Vikings and Chiefs workouts were conducted under the watchful eye of NFL referees, who threw some flags to make some points. For the most part, however, they instructed players on new points of emphasis for the 2004 season.

Officials have been told to watch if defenders are making illegal contact on receivers after the five-yard limit and to watch for defensive holding penalties at the line of scrimmage. The last point of emphasis will be flagging illegal blocks in the back and above the waist on kick returns.

The NFL also wants more 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalties called if two or more players are involved in a choreographed celebration. Any foreign objects brought on the field, such as Terrell Owens' Sharpie or Joe Horne's cell phone, will result in ejection.

Also, punts that cross the goal line will now be blown dead for touchbacks.

Injury report: Tight end Jim Kleinsasser was limited in the evening practice after suffering a minor ankle injury in the morning session. He should practice today. Running back Moe Williams was held out of the late practice because of a sore calf.

As expected, receiver Marcus Robinson (hamstring) and tight end Jermaine Wiggins (shoulder) did not work out and will likely rest until practice next week.

Running back Onterrio Smith (hip flexor), receiver Keenan Howry (sore knee) and defensive end Darrion Scott (arch) all sat out the evening practice.

Briefly: Tice thought the team's young linebackers struggled against the Chiefs, who exploited the middle on run plays and passes to tight ends.

    • The agent of recently released offensive lineman Lewis Kelly received a couple of calls from interested teams on Friday .

    • Receiver Kenny Clark will have season-ending back surgery next week.

Whats the deal on the stadium. Is it gonna be a Twins/Vikings joint thing. Or are both trying to get seperate ones?

seperate stadiums, neither the twins or vikes would agree to a multi-team stadium.

This is about the 10th time Tagliabue has come to Minnesota to try and help get a stadium, he has had no effect. The legislatures here in Minnesota are chicken shit and affraid to vote on it, they did however approve a 100 million for a theater.

You're kidding about the theater, right? Right?

That would be insane if it were true (which it might be). After all, the Twin Cities is the most literate metropolitan area in the country, according to some recent poll.

While I want a new stadium for the Vikings (if that is what is necessary to keep them "competitive" and in the Minnesota area), I can sympathize with voters who feel that things like spending public tax dollars on education and other infrastructure that benefits a larger majority is more important than a new, state of the art stadium for a billionaire owner so that his investment (already worth twice what he paid for it) will be worth even more while the current stadium is, at the very least, serviceable and functional.

Hopefully, the legislature is answering to the taxpayers when it is dragging it's feet to fund a new stadium. If taxpayers were for spending tax dollars for a new stadium for the Vikings, it would be easy to put a referendum on the ballot to get voter approval on a bond issue to pay for the public portion (as they did here in Cincinnati, by adding 1/2 of 1% sales tax to the existing sales tax in Hamilton County to fund new stadiums for the Reds and Bengals). My guess is the Minneapolis area residents would defeat such a referendum.

Seriously, when you already have state lotteries, Indian casinos, and horse racing (with poker rooms) in the area, why the state doesn't build a casino as part of the stadium complex and let the casino profits pay for the stadium? Legalized gambling is now a way of life across our country, and is about as voluntary a "tax" as you'll ever find.

Tried the casino thing for 2 years, did not work. It would be expanding gambling at the same time they approved 2 indian gaming casinos and have let them expand almost every casino.

The politicians were too busy drinking on the job this session :drunken: to get anything done on a stadium or anything else. And the Governor was too busy traveling the world on sightseeing missions and campaigning to call a special session. And Red just can't dig any deeper in his pockets to pay his fair share (which for a billionare should be 100%)
Anoka County did all it could do.

I didn't know you guys had casinos out there  that's the main reason Tag doesn't want a team out here or for that reason a Super Bowl, because of gambling

Hard to keep track they build new ones so fast , if I remember right there was 17 the last time I heard, and almost all of them have been expanding.

Yet can't put up a casino to pay for stadiums and help with taxes!
Tribal casino's here are non-taxable, they were originaly were supposed to pay back 97% from their slot machines, but if they just pay a fine of $25,000 they can pay back what every they want to (hard to get figures because they do not have to disclose them, but what I have heard they are paying back around 85%, Casino's in vegas pay back between 95 & 97% (so they rip us off).

The tribal Casino's here are the 2nd largest contributers to the Democratic Party (known as the DFL here) in Minnesota behind the Teachers Union, being that both our House and Senate have a democratic majority, they squash all bills that pertain to opening casino's that are not tribal related.

There are 2 casinos within 30 minutes of my new home in Eden Prairie!
