Nearing the end

There was no sign of receiver Koren Robinson as the Vikings completed their second-to-last practice of training camp here in Mankato. Robinson, arrested for drunk driving Tuesday night after attempting to flee police, left St. Peter on Wednesday with his wife and best friend. It remains uncertain what the future holds for him.

A few other notes:

– The release of John Torp this morning means Chris Kluwe has won the punting job. Kluwe said his knee feels fine after offseason surgery. In addition to punting, Kluwe also is the holder for kicker Ryan Longwell.

– Cornerback Tony Beckham saw some action with the first-team in the nickel. E.J. Henderson and Napoleon Harris were the linebackers. Dovonte Edwards, who is expected to play in the nickel, started practice but left during individual drills because of a sprained right ankle suffered Wednesday. Edwards also banged up his knee.

– A list of the players who did not practice Thursday morning: Receiver Kevin Kasper (ankle); running back Mewelde Moore (knee); cornerback Charles Gordon (knee); and linebacker Marcus Lawrence (knee).

– Linebacker Chad Greenway (torn ACL) has been placed on injured reserve, officially ending his season.

The Vikings final practice in Mankato will take place this afternoon beginning at 2:45 p.m. It will be conducted in shorts and will be a full-squad workout.

Anybody want to talk about Pittsburgh?

Brad Childress did today. He said that Brad Johnson, Tarvaris Jackson and Mike McMahon will split the quarterback duties Saturday night against the Steelers — in that order. Johnson will start and play into the second quarter, along with the rest of the Vikings starters, Childress said.

Childress cautioned against reading too much into Jackson being the first quarterback off the bench. He said earlier in camp that he wanted to see Jackson work with the second team because it is sometimes difficult to evaluate quarterbacks when they play with the third team. He is more familiar with McMahon and needs less evaluation time with him.

In other tidbits (some tiddier than others):

*Childress said he has “excused” Koren Robinson from team activities following his arrest Tuesday night for drunken driving and fleeing police. Childress said the length of Robinson’s absence has been left “open-ended.”

*Running back Mewelde Moore (knee) and kick returner Kevin Kasper (ankle) will not play against the Steelers. Neither will linebacker Marcus Lawrence (knee).

*The Vikings will have a mock game, closed to the public, tomorrow morning and then break training camp for good. They will resume practice at Winter Park on Monday
