    Last update: July 22, 2006 – 5:49 PM

    Age: 23 • Ht: 6-1 • Wt: 232

Acquired: In a surprise move, the Vikings traded two third-round draft picks to the Steelers for the last pick in the second round, with which they selected Jackson.

Contract status: Xyxyxyx xyyx yxy x yxy xyxyyxyxy xyx y

College: Spent two years at Arkansas, one as a red shirt, before playing three years at Alabama State, leading ASU to two SWAC title games and their first SWAC title in 15 years.

Stats: Threw for 7,849 yards and 67 touchdowns in three seasons at ASU. Went 24-12 as a starter. Was the starter for the East in the East-West Shrine Game.

Notable Montgomery natives: Rosa Parks, Hank Williams and Lanier alum Bart Starr.

Pros: Excellent feet, strong arm, strong build, good mechanics, leadership skills.

Cons: Big difference between the Southwestern Athletic Conference and the NFL, although Jerry Rice and Steve McNair had no trouble making the transition.

    Testimonials:

    • ASU strength coach Derek Scott: "I played against [Steve] McNair, and I don't think he had Tarvaris' work ethic. Tarvaris is something special."

    • ASU coach Charles Coe: "He was our leader in every sense of the word."

    • Former ASU defensive lineman Tyrone Rogers, who played for the Cleveland Browns: "He's always been a hard worker, and he was a great teammate. I think he'll do well in the NFL."

Good read and looks to give further reason as to why the Vikes drafted him. As we know the physical attributes alone won't be enough to make him a top flight NFL QB but shows that he's aware of the work ethic that is going to be needed to get to that level.

Look for the early days in Training Camp to see if he has absorbed and reatined what he was shown during the earlier minicamps. At least - at present - he's lower down on the depth chart which will allow him that 'growing' time which he will need to become fully conversant with the schemes that Childress is bringing in.
