    Minnesota Vikings: Superbowl XLIV contenders?

    http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/9...d-losers-mixed

"2009 outlook: Good. The Vikings have the NFL's leading rusher (Adrian Peterson) and the makings of a smothering defensive unit. With improved quarterback play and special teams coverage, Minnesota could make a legitimate run at Super Bowl XLIV."

    Thoughts?

(I used the search and didn't find any matches so IF this has already been posted, I'm sorry.)

Too be honest I think we are a better QB away from being a champion period.
I also am not overly worried about special teams, lets get Heath Farwell back.
I'm sorry that was a huge loss this year and I for one would like to see how his play effects the unit.

A few things to ponder before we crown the team as favorites going into next year.

1- We may likely lose our defensive coordinator and have to replace him. There is no guarantee his replacement will get the defense to play at the same level next year.

2- There is a very good chance we will be playing the first 25% of the season without our starting interior line. If you think the defense will be as good as it was this year without those two you may be disappointed.

    3- Coaching.

4- Oline. We have a system that takes 3 years to learn and we may have to replace the center and RT with new guys. That means we will not have a cohesive unit to execute the KAO next year so our scoring might be down and we may not be as good of a rushing or passing offense,

Projected cap space: $20 million. Vikings owner Zygi Wilf opened his checkbook in 2008 for Allen, WR Bernard Berrian and FS Madieu Williams. The only position where Minnesota may need to spend lavishly this offseason is at quarterback.
Here is what Marrdro was looking for.

Re: Minnesota Vikings: Superbowl XLIV contenders?

    I agree.
Here are my thoughts (not in order):

    1)
Special Teams...I find it insulting as a fan that our coaches simply do not take this aspect more seriously.
It is time to dedicate some energy and financial resources to the return game, in particular.
Defending punts and kickoffs is equally embarrassing; must be addressed.

    2)
Potential Leslie Frazier exit...whereas I don't think he is as good as Tomlin, he has delivered with what he had.
If he goes, this is obviously an important hire.
    3)
QB...simply have got to have better play from the position.
The play improved this year, but neither Gus (Cuss as Kevoncox calls him, because he 'cusses everytime he plays'
;D), nor TJack are the answer IMO.
TJack can play well on occasion, but, at this point, he is just far too inconsistent.
He folded in the second half Sunday...yes, he played well down the stretch, but, he folded bigtime.
Beg, borrow, steal, trade...use the Jared Allen trade as a benchmark; but, DO SOMETHING!!!
    4)
Still need improved play from the safeties and cornerbacks.
Griff made a huge step forward this year, Winfield made the Pro-Bowl...so, I guess I would pinpoint Safeties and nickel backs.
DB depth = better ST play.

    5)
    LB depth.
Our starting squad is very solid, but, LB depth = better ST play.
    6)
    OLine...specifically, RT.
Sorry, I just don't think Cook is getting it done in the passing game.
He seems to do OK sometimes in the running game, but, an upgrade to the position is needed.
Kinda like my upgrade to a MacBook Pro from an HP...not totally needed, but necessary.
I'm hopeful that we keep Birk and jettison Cook from the starting lineup.
Replacing two is not a good idea IMO.
    7)
WR...not sure about the whole #1, #2, #3 thing...Philly does just fine without it.
But, we DO need more production from our #3 WR and/or #4.
Uffda had a good point earlier today with respect to developing players...why haven't Rice and Allison brought more to the party?
I think the Vikes should bring in a proven FA in the "reasonable" price range.
    Just a thought.

Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent

As a matter of fact, I do know

    1. The defense has played great the last two years with two different DC's.
Why would we think otherwise even if we lose Frazier?

    2.
I dont think they will be suspended at all when it is all said and done.
    Key word is think.

    3.
Coaching will be fine if they can find a quarterback.
With the key players that will be coming back from injuries.

    4.
That all depends on what we do this offseason.
We might have the same guys back here next year and some added ones for all we know.

    Trying to be optimistic here.
    ;D
