Re: Minnesota Vikings sign former Wisconsin kicker to contract

I assume a future contract means that he doesn't count against the current roster size?
Obviously something has been seen to make it worth signing him up now - as commented maybe the Vikes got wind that other teams were targetting him for the off-season. If thats the case then a smart move and makes a change to be looking ahead and being proactive instead of reactive.
Course downside is that it uses up a roster spot in the futire for a specialist position... one less QB on the roster then and we'll have to stick with only 3 QBs...

Taylor Mehlhaff upset with performance for New Orleans Saints

    http://blog.nola.com/saintsbeat/2008/08/mehlhaff_kicking_himself.html

but his kickoffs came up short of expectations
Mehlhaff said his focus needs to remain on his strength -- maintaining a consistent kickoff hang time of at least 4.2 seconds.
    LMFAO!

Didn't we bring in Steven Hauschka to do that as well. Hmmmmmm where is he? This means nothing. We don't even know if he will make the team. I am betting he won't. So put that tongue back in and straighten those eyes. Hell I bet we bring in some RBs to try out. I guess Peterson is done then as well. Longwell is going no where. He WILL be our kicker next year.
Its killing you isn't it. ;D

    Comeon my friend.
All kidding aside, they are only bringing him in as a prospect to see if he can take some wear and tear off of your guys leg on KO's and we can get the ball in the endzone on KO's which will help out on field position.

Last time this type of thing happened (FG kicker focused just on FG/PAT's) our kicker was perfect on the season.

Seems to be a win win for the team.

    Typical Marr,

He falls in love with young guys who could potentially replace old ex-packers in the blink of an eye. Marr, you know nothing about this guy! NOTHING. You won't see him play for another 8 months!

But hey, who am I to stop you? If you want to sniff the crotch of a no-name kicker with no experience at all, go ahead, sniff it.
    Crotch sniffiing?
How is looking at the possibility of upgrading a flaw the team has crotchsniffing?

Sure he is young, but I wouldn't be apposed to a vet either, if he could get the ball into the endzone on KO's.

By the way, have you seen how all the youngsters are doing this year in the ole Kicking Game?
Seems a young guy, with the right coach, can play in this league.... ;D

I dont get it. Why do people expect Longwell to kick it to the endzone when he has only 61 touchbacks in his 12 year long career. I would say he hasnt struggled this year, I would say it is quite expected of him not to reach the endzone every kickoff. The coaches should know that when they signed him, and not signed a kickoff specialist (until now) and we should know it so dont start whining about it Longwell not reaching the endzone.

Kicks is important yes, but coverage is also important. You might even say coverage starts witha
good kick and I dont want to change the topic of this thread to a "ST is bad covering kickoffs and punts" but I would hope for better coverage. And also a kickoff specialist takes up one rosterspot so who do we kick out from the roster who isnt needed do you think?
I think you missed my point Dekay.
    I don't expect him to.
He doesn't have the leg to.
My point is that there are guys out there that do it all the time.

Maybe this kid, or another, might be brought in to help extend the life of the "Great Longwell" in the area of FG's and PAT's.

All indications are that the staff is thinking that way.
Wonder why it is so hard for some (not picking on you) to comprehend that it might be a good thing... ;D

Anything that helps us out on ST's will make me happy, including a new ST's coach.
