HOUSTON -- Despite a verbal olive branch of sorts from coach Mike Sherman earlier this week, the agent for holdout cornerback Mike McKenzie said here Friday that his client remains steadfast in his desire to be traded, even though Packers officials concede that they are not close to a deal.

Agent Drew Rosenhaus, in Houston to observe the combined practices of the Texans and Miami Dolphins this weekend, said he spoke to Sherman on Wednesday about McKenzie and that Sherman told him the team would welcome back the five-year veteran. But asked if he sensed any scenario under which McKenzie might return to the Packers for this or future seasons, Rosenhaus shook his head.

"No, none at all," Rosenhaus said. "He's pretty well dug in."

The Packers are receptive to trade offers but, for now at least, no one had made an offer that comes close to meeting Green Bay's demands. This spring the Packers were seeking a first-round pick and a middle-rounder for the 28-year-old McKenzie, a starter since his rookie season. It is not known if Green Bay has reduced its asking price.

One move the Packers did make recently was to revoke permission for Rosenhaus to discuss with other teams the potential for a trade. That permission had been granted in May and the typically proactive Rosenhaus spoke with several teams. There was interest from a few clubs in McKenzie, an excellent player at a premium position, but no teams indicated they would surrender a first-round choice.

"You've got to remain optimistic, because the Packers are talking [to teams], and there is a willingness to trade him for the right price," Rosenhaus said. "But right now, from my conversation with Mike Sherman, there is certainly nothing imminent. You just get up every day and hope that will be the day some team decides it needs a veteran cornerback of Mike's caliber."

McKenzie has three seasons remaining on the five-year, $17 million contract extension he signed late in the 2001 season, when he was on the cusp of restricted free agency. The former University of Memphis player is due base salaries of $2.75 million this season, then $3.43 million in '05 and $4.1 million in '06. It is believed that McKenzie is being fined $5,000 per day, the maximum permitted by the collective bargaining agreement.

Rosenhaus said McKenzie is at home in Memphis, taking summer classes at his alma mater and working with a personal trainer.

In five seasons, McKenzie has started in 67 of 69 appearances, posting 286 tackles, 15 interceptions and 70 passes defensed. Rosenhaus is his fifth different agent since McKenzie entered the league in 1999 as a third-round draft choice.
