    McCombs negotiating exclusively with Fowler

Report: McCombs negotiating exclusively with Fowler

Vikings owner Red McCombs has signed an agreement to negotiate a sale of the franchise exclusively with the group led by Arizona businessman Reggie Fowler, according to multiple reports.

In its Monday evening newscast and on its Web site, KSTP (Ch. 5) reported that McCombs has discussed the parameters of a sale with representatives of Fowler’s group, which also includes local auto dealer Denny Hecker and several New York-based investors. The Star Tribune confirmed that report in its Tuesday editions.

"We're still evaluating the opportunity to acquire the Vikings," Fowler told KSTP. "We have met with Mr. McCombs, had an enjoyable meeting, and we're trying to hope to get through the process soon so that we can make a decision that works for all parties."

The Tribune reported Fowler likely will have 60 days to reach a formal agreement with McCombs, without the threat of a counteroffer from another group.

Fowler reportedly spent part of the day looking at houses in the Twin Cities, and attended the Timberwolves-Pistons game with Hecker on Monday night.

Ironically, Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor met with McCombs in San Antonio over the weekend to discuss a sale, according to several sources, but was unwilling to meet McCombs' asking price.

Fowler, who played college football at Wyoming, first emerged as a potential buyer last year, but reportedly balked at McCombs' $600 million asking price. The franchise was valued at $604 million in September by Forbes magazine -- more than double the $246 million McCombs paid for the team in 1998.

It has been widely reported that McCombs had targeted this offseason for a sale; the contracts of most members of the Vikings coaching staff, as well as key front office executives, expire next January. A deal likely would need to be reached within weeks in order to gain approval at the owner's meetings in March.

Fowler is the owner of Chandler, Ariz.-based Spiral Inc., a real estate development and aviations simulator manufacturing company that employs 75. He has said he would move his company’s home office to Minnesota if a deal is reached, and that he has no intention to move the team.

According to Black Enterprise Magazine, Spiral is the 11th-ranked black-owned industrial/services company, with $314 million in 2003 sales. Fowler hopes to become the first African-American majority owner in the NFL.

In the past, Fowler has indicated a willingness to provide significant private financing for a new stadium. The Vikings’ lease at the Metrodome expires in 2011, meaning the team likely would have to secure financing by next summer to ensure a new facility would be ready for the 2012 season.

Though McCombs made a reported $30 million profit on the team last year, team officials have said for several years that the franchise's 64,121-seat facility doesn't provide them enough revenue from concessions, luxury seating and parking.

It is believed that a sale of the franchise would help the Vikings' chances for a new stadium. The club has officially pulled the plug on its stadium push, but Anoka County, the preferred location of the new facility, approved $125,000 in additional funding for its end of the stadium effort last month.

McCombs, who put the team up for sale in 2002, as recently as October expressed interest in relocating the team to Los Angeles if public funding for a new stadium can’t be secured. :wav:

    Interesting.

Funny, reports keep coming out that Fowler doesn't have the personal wealth to pull this off. Goes something like---if Fowler is to be the majority owner, he needs to show 1/3 of the money himself. That is where the debate begins. Will be fun to watch. I had heard (yesterday, I believe) by a sportscaster that if McCombs is to sell, he and the league would want it done before the Superbowl. That would set things up for the owner's meeting in------awwww, I forget. A month or two after the Superbowl, maybe?
