Maurice Mann activated by Vikings

Mann activated by Vikings

Being released three times by three teams in three years did create a few doubts that this day would ever come.

What Maurice Mann never wavered from was his belief that he could play in the NFL.

Mann's refusal to give up on a childhood dream was rewarded Sunday when the Vikings receiver was activated for Sunday's game against the Bears.

"I was so excited to be out on the field in a regular season game,' Mann said. "The only thing that would have made it better is if we could have pulled it out."

The Vikings fell in the final minute 19-16 to the Bears in a battle of unbeaten teams.

Mann is still looking for his first NFL reception. For that matter, he is waiting for a pass to come in his direction.

But the Monterey High product apparently has made an impression on the Vikings coaching staff after just two weeks.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pounder got on the field for 24 plays, lining up as a flanker when the Vikings went to three- and four-receiver formations.

"I must have not gotten open enough to catch a pass,' Mann said. "It is just a chemistry thing. That starts in practice.'

It is Mann's hope that he will get to run with the first and second team units this week in practice.

Mann learned that he would be activated during Saturday's practice on the eve of the Vikings showdown with Chicago for first place.

"I wanted to make a good impression,' Mann said. "If I wasn't going to catch a pass, I was going to make something happen.'

Mann helped spring Vikings running back Chester Taylor twice on runs for first downs with his blocking downfield.

"Yeah, but I also had a penalty,' Mann said. "If I was giving myself a grade, it would be 'B'. But it was an awesome experience.'

Mann, who originally made Seattle's roster, but was cut three days before the season opener, was signed by Minnesota off the Seahawks practice squad.

A former All-State receiver at MPC, Mann, 24, led Seattle in the preseason in receptions with 10 and appeared to be a lock to play in their four-receiver formations.

"If you'd have asked me two weeks ago, I would have told you I would be in Seattle,' Mann said. "I understand this is a business."

Drafted by Cincinnati out of the University of Nevada in 2004, Mann has been released by the Bengals, Dolphins and Seahawks.

Mann might have felt jilted twice after being cut by the Bengals and Seattle -- after being told he had made the team initial 53-man roster.

"You kind of get doubts about your future,' Mann said. "You start to wonder what do you have to do to make a team?'

Mann was told by the receivers coach Saturday to expect to be on the field as a flanker when the Vikings went to three receivers.

He lined up on the outside and in the slot Sunday.

"I did a little extra studying,' said Mann, who has only had five practices with Minnesota. "To play me as much as they did showed they had confidence in me."

Mann admitted there were a couple of times when he came back to the huddle to inform quarterback Brad Johnson that he was open.

"I was open all game,' Mann joked. "But I don't want to nag him too much. Right now it's chemistry. In a couple of games, I'll let him know every single play."

The Vikings are slated to come out to San Francisco on Nov. 5. Mann is also looking forward to games in Seattle and Miami.

After the game, Mann received calls from his mother, his two brothers and friends. The Vikings-Bears game was a nationally televised game.

"I'm happy here,' Mann said. "I have a role here and I fit in. I'm going to be alright."

They had his number wrong in the game book - did you notice that?
They had him as #18, but he was on the field as #17.
Took me awhile to figure out who the heck that was....

That might be that he haven't had enough reps at it yet in practice. I think eventually he'll get a shot at it. He got that speedburst like TWill does.

Thanks to PPE for the sig.

I argued this on a different board throughout the preseason, but why the f*** aren't they activating Jason Carter? He looked damn good throughout the preseason and is better then this Mann character imo

yeah, i agree with that.
Carter did look pretty in the preseason and i haven't ever heard much about Mann.
I guess time will tell though.
Hopefully we can get him some reps on returns and get MeMo out of there.

Childress wont play Carter, hes a rookie. But he will keep letting Twill try and return kicks, drop passes, and have offensive interference calls. And Taylor can keep dropping passes and the ball. But do NOT play a rookie!
