Re: Madden: Peterson a great runner, not back.
I agree with Madden.
At OK he didn't have to do either block or receive much.
It's only his 2nd year.
Payton's 1st year averaged 6.5 yards, 2nd 9.9
Peterson 1st year 14.1, 2nd so far 5.9.
Payton easily had a better QB and was a every down back.
AD is becoming a better blocker, but I still think that he should NOT be an every down back.
In today's NFL teams need multiple backs.
What needs to happen is AD and CT need to be able to play any down.
For AD to have more than a 7 or 8 productive seasons, he needs to take some reps off.
Give AD a quality passing game and the sky's the limit.

Ditto gagarr- it's only the kid's second year.
In college he never had to catch passes.
If he's as good an athlete as I think, the rest will come.

C'mon guys, it's not like he's saying Adrian Peterson sucks or something!
Personally, I take John Madden's comment on AD more as a compliment. He said that he thinks Adrian is one of the best runners that's ever played. You gotta love that.

Re: Madden: Peterson a great runner, not back.
I understand what Madden is saying, but I think he's dissecting way too much. I also understand that ball care and blocking is an important aspect but how many times have you heard "He's a great blocker and takes wonderful care of the football, now if only he could run"?
No, backs are praised for their yards and touchdowns and all those important "fantasy" stats. People like L.T. and Portis come to mind.
The only time blocking and ball care is brought up is when AFTER the yards are collected and they break it down on NFL Primetime or some pooh where phrases like "Not only is he a great runner, but he can get those blocks in ya need down field or on pass protection-- let's go to the tape!". Almost brought up as fun facts; something behind the scenes of the yards and the running. A "bonus" if you will.[size=11pt]"The only thing better than food & football is maybe Brett Favre."

Another time it is mentioned is when your QB is hung out to dry and out for the season when the RB misses his blocking assignment..... ;DMany many thanks to my talented friend Jos for the new Sig.

doesn't mean he's a great pass catcher, he actually bobbled that throw and almost dropped the pass

I agree he still has some areas to work on.
