More endurance. More leg strength. A new approach to kickoffs. These are just a few of the things Vikings kicker Ryan Longwell addressed during the off-season....

"If at first you don't succeed, parachuting is not for you"

Re: Longwell Makes Changes
Longwell just has to get some air under that ball, and get more than 4 seconds air time so we can run under it and cover. No more line drives to the 10 yrd line.

I don't like to read all the negative postings, but this seems to be looking through purple colored glasses, doesn't it?
I didn't think he was kicking very well.

Re: Longwell Makes Changes
We will see, in the last preseason game I saw some boom, in his leg, but I also saw line drives to the 10-12 yard line. Easily returnable. He's got to get 4.5 seconds hang-time, down to the goal-line so we can run down field and cover it.

Re: Longwell Makes Changes
It's so important for him to be accurate within the 50 yard range. This gives the Vikes a lot more options when the team can depend on his accuracy and consistency.
Also, he needs to drive the ball on the kick-offs, Special Teams will benefit greatly with better hang time and distance.
I am so stoked for tomorrow’s game with the Falcons!
It all starts up front

Re: Longwell Makes Changes
He had that really long FG in the first game of Pre.
The other misses, I think they may have had some issues with the snap and hold.
I remember at least one of those misses the announcers were talking about the "high snap."
I wouldn't let it bother you about "not having a good preseason."
IMHO, the only thing we need to worry about is something that I don't think RL can fix.
He just doesn't have the leg to get the ball deep enough for touch backs on the kick off.
We could use a few of those now and then.
Without the touch backs, it puts more pressure on out ST unit, scary!

Re: Longwell Makes Changes
I love how every article I see on RL has the mention of Tiger Woods in it.
Woods is RL's Hero!
They are neighbors in Florida for anyone that hasn't been reading the articles.

I agree. I'm not sure about snap or hold issues on his misses. He definately has more pop this year and should continue his accuracy as the season progresses. He had that really long FG in the first game of Pre.

He had 3 touchbacks last year. He will surprise me if he has more than that this year.
His short leg on kickoffs is a true liability. If his accuracy wanes on field goals, he will be gone next season.“What takes a quarterback to the next level is not arm strength or mobility or any of that stuff. It’s the ability to play on critical downs. Manage third downs, or red zones or four-minute or two-minute situations"
