Lloyd hopes Vikings have room for two kickers

Lloyd hopes Vikings have room for two on their roster

MANKATO Statistically, the chances of place-kicker Rhys Lloyd making the Minnesota Vikings may not be good. Sometimes, however, you have to look beyond the numbers.

If the Vikings can't see the need to keep a kicker on the team that can consistantly boot kickoffs into the endzone, then they need to have their heads examined.

No way can we continue to afford giving up great field position to our opponents, due to Longwell's kickoff's that land between the 20 & 10 YL.

Longwell ranked 26th in average distance last year, 29th in avg. yds. returned & had only 5 touchbacks (26th) out of 98 kickoffs.

Agreed Singer, the need for someone who can kick deep is there for all to see. Longwell's kick off's are just not good enough.

The Vikings went out and pursued Llyod in the offseason. I don't think there is any question that he is going to make the squad. KOS are becoming very valuable, and you can get creative and make room on the roster.

I have heard that he has been doing decent in FG drills during camp. If we have to go down to one kicker, maybe it is Longwell who is left holding the short stick...

With keeping two kickers & a punter on the roster, which I also think they'll do, one wonders where they are going to get the extra spot from.

If/when Favre comes back, I wonder how many QB's will they keep on the roster. 3? 4? Will they try to sneak Webb onto the practice squad? Would it be a poor move?

I don't think we will keep 4 - pretty sure Sage is gone. But that still wouldn't open up a spot, 3 is the norm. I expect them to use one of the WRs or RBs that are on the roster just for special teams, like Reynaud.

Re:Lloyd hopes Vikings have room for two kickers

    A few thoughts.

I like the idea of a guy who can hit touchbacks, but people are really giving him more credit than he's worth.

"Constantly kicking between the 20 and 10"

63 yard average is not between the 20 and 10. And for those who blame Longwell for the NFCC, whats to say Lloyd would hit a touchback, or the returner would take a knee? It was a breakdown in coverage, plain and simple. Blaming the kicker is rediculous.

Longwell had his excuse about how not kicking off could hurt him in the wind. Might be legit, might be just him whining. However, if him kicking off is the difference between making or missing field goals later on, I'll gladly substitute touchbacks for accuracy.

That is what I am wondering. What position will be left thin? I think we might go back to the number of WRs we are use to.

And kickoff specialist Rhys Lloyd, one of the few veteran free agents signed by the Vikings, has fallen behind Ryan Longwell in the battle for the kickoff duties.

I know this does not mean shit but it is funny. I am going to laugh my ass off if he does not make the team. Lots of crow to be eaten when that happens.
