Longwell proved Friday night he still had a leg for field goal kicking, tying his personal best. Keuwe is the team's best punter by far, But we still are sorely lacking in the kick-off phase of the game. We are losing 10-15 yards per kickoff. That can be a lot!
Next year I'm guess Childress will be looking for a kick-off specialist who can also put as good as Kluwe.
He better be doing that now. That 10-15 yard loss per kick off quickly equates into great field position for our opponents & could cost us games.

We can't rely on the defense saving our dimply buttocks & scoring 3 defensive TD's every game.
Exactly Singer. They brought in Reyes because they didn't want separate punters and kick-off guys. That just takes up an extra roster spot. But in my estimation Reyes isn't the guy. He better get some guys in trying out.

Reyes definitely won't make it. His kickoffs were lackluster against the Jets. And the 10-15 yards shouldn't be blamed on the kickers, it should be blamed on the tackling by the special teams. On almost every kickoff on Friday, our defenders were missing tackles left and right. I never thought I'd miss Jason Glenn this much.

There has been something of a buzz concerning the potential punting battle between Chris Kluwe and rookie Alex Reyes. That battle took an interesting turn at Tuesday's practice in Mankato - a turn that might not be favorable for Kluwe.
kluwe may not be the best punter but at least he kicks it farther that rayes. All i saw from rayes were consistently short kickoffs.Keep kluwe,if he doesnt work out this year then draft a punter next year in like round 5 or something

Kluwe punted well at times last year, but we need some kickoffs to get into the endzone once in while also.

Also, our coverage has not been all that great.

    Re: Kluwe's Job In Trouble?

I loved Kluwe's game two years ago but since the surgery on his knee he's been really lacking in his punting. Part of that may be his concentration on directional punting too. Reyes didn't look any better than Longwell on kickoffs. We desperately need someone who can kick it deep into the end zone and help out our kick coverage guys.

    That's the negative.

The positive is that if we really need a kicker or punter at some point of the year, if we pick up a guy then they can come in and play from day one. No need to learn a playbook really when all you do is kick.

The problem is that there's no one great out there. There could be a diamond in the rough. John Deraney from NC state can do both and kickoffs but he was only a slightly above average punter/kicker. That would be the only guy I have inside info on..

well i think he's all the way back now from that knee injury.
but he doesn't kickoff and i don't feel reyes is the answer.
he has a legitmate shot and it appears he is blowing it.
we will just have to live with longwell this year unless it gets so bad that they end up using a roster spot on a kickoff specialist.
but i think we are gonna be alright, coverage has to be better and tackling.

I would say yeah it is din't get alot of yards when he had to kick it away. Reyes has been doing ok. Well Kluwe has a big leg. I can see Kluwe stepping up and keeping his spot at least for now.
