I think kelly will realize that there will not be a lot of interest in him. he will not start anywhere. His agent threw it out there that he was released on purpose to see what teams would contact him. Kelly will find out quickly that no one will want him for anything but a #3-#4 spot which is where he is now.
Not to defend him, but Kelly isn't slated to "start" at all. In my mind, he is competing for the dime back (#4) CB slot. By giving Rushen Jones the reps, Tice was sending a message to Kelly that he may be slipping to #5 on the Vikings.
That said, Tice is absolutely correct in saying that Kelly (or for that matter, everyone on the team) must compete for their position. Even though some guys are mortal locks (Moss), it doesn't mean they can play like crap and expect to remain in their spot. Frankly, I hope Kelly returns to the Vikings on Monday with fire in his belly and the determination to show that he is the 4th or 3rd best CB on the team (if not even better than 3rd). It took awhile for the Vikings to re-sign Kelly, as he was a restricted free agent but no other teams were willing to give the Vikings a 3rd or 4th round pick (whatever he was drafted at) as compensation. Kelly could very well wind up being a #3 or #4 CB on another team right now, but I think Ken Irvin is easily the 3rd best CB on the Vikings. Kelly has to prove he is better than Jones, Mays, and whoever else they have in camp.
