    Just a thought about Greenway

    With E.J. playing so well this year, NEPO also a surprise and Leber stepping up, what happens to Greenway? It's pretty safe to say E.J. is a WSLB and has finally found his nitche. How could you pull him? Is Greenway fit to do strong side? We've already invested a lot into Leber ($) and he's playing well. Your thoughts gentlemen?

    Let them fight it out...and the best man wins.
    Both will still get plenty of playing time...and depth NEVER hurt any team!

    Agreed, obviously injuries occur; look at our roster.....

    Besides, he's a 1st round draft pick without having proven anything and therefore has nil trade/market value (well not NIL but little...)

    we'll worry about that come next year. And as has been said, depth at that postion is a plus.

    Re: Just a thought about Greenway

    We will find out next year when the two compete for the starting role. I don't know how either Leber or Greenway would do at the strong side.

    We certainly didn't get a chance to see Greenway perform this year at either position. So we won't know until next year. I doubt we'd ever get rid of Greenway before we get a chance to see what he brings to the field.

    Greenway's contract;

    Terms of the Deal according to St. Paul Pioneer:
    10.75 million over 5 years
    1.35 million roster bonus for 2006
    5.11 million option bonus next spring
    1 million for meeting the mininmun playing time over the next for years

    Leber's contract;

    5 year contract worth $20 million, with a $4 million signing bonus.

    If it comes down to a close race & we can't afford to keep them both, the money is going to do the talking. Leber will also be in his 6th year, so that will be weighed into the equation.

    Well we would first have to give E.J Henderson a new contract to stay here next year before any competition happens and some other team could be interested in him since he is a solid player and won't cost as much as paying Cato June or Lance Briggs.

    Re: Just a thought about Greenway

    why do we only need 3 good linebackers?
    if we had 4 good backers, we oculd mix and match players for certain situations, or even show some different formations (3-4, 46, etc)
    plus, you saw what happened this year, already we've had a few key injuries, (greenway, tank williams, erasmus) but fortunately we have depth to fill those positions.
    depth is always a good thing

    Re: Just a thought about Greenway

    That's the good thing about the 5 year contract.
    He can provide good depth during spot duty (nickel and dime packages, give starters a break) and play special teams.
    When we wins the starting job sometime down the road then we get to see what we drafted.
    We definitely need to re-sign E.J.
    He has proven that with a new scheme and coaches that he can be the player he was in college.
