By those numbers he is just slightly better. I wouldn't go as far as saying that one is better than the other. They are pretty much the same. It would be hard for me to favor one over the other. However, since i am a vikings fan, i gotta go with Kenny Irvs!

Your right, because he has three hundreths of a pass deflection more per start or whatever he is a better player. Numbers don't lie, but they are deceiving. The fact that Irvin is years older than MacKenzie, but has relatively the same amount of starts tells us something. Has Irvin every been a #1 corner on a team? If not those stats came from covering inferior players.

All those career stats just tell me that Irvin has done similar things to what McKenzie has done in a shorter period of time.

Okay, now lets look at it a different way.

You looked at games started. Lets look at games they appeared in.

Ken Irvin: 326 tackles in 140 appearances or 2.33 tackles an appearance
Mike McKenzie: 286 tackles in 69 appearances or 4.14 tackles an appearance

Ken Irvin: 76 Pass Deflections in 140 appearances or 0.54 an appearance
Mike McKenzie: 70 Pass Deflections in 69 appearances or 1.01 an appearance

Conclusion. Mike McKenzie is almost twice as good as Ken Irvin, Numbers don't lie!!!

(but they can be manipulated pretty easily)

Lets also not fail to note that McKenzie has started 67 of the 69 games he's appeared in (97.1%), while Irvin has only started 71 of the 140 games he has appeared in (50.7%). That indicates that Irvin has spent about half of his career far enough down on the depth chart that he didn't get the starts. If he was as good as McKenzie, he'd have gotten the starts.

Not to mention the intimidation factor that needs to be accounted for. Some teams will rarely throw in McKenzie's direction for most of a game. That is in intangible that needs to be considered as well.

Anyone have some strong pain killers? It hurt to defend a Packer like that. (I still think he has some major character issues, but trying to say that he's no better than a third stringer seemed ridiculous to me.)
