Jackson's coach will give Vikings some help

In an interesting twist, Reggie Barlow is spending a couple of weeks with the Vikings working as part of the NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship Program. The former NFL receiver serves as quarterbacks coach at Alabama State.
Barlow told the Star Tribune in early May he wasn't thrilled about coach Brad Childress' comments following the Vikings' decision to take Barlow's pupil, Tarvaris Jackson, in the second round of the NFL draft.

At the time, Childress said: "I think [Jackson] is a sponge. You are talking about a guy that never had a coach there as a quarterbacks coach. So what can he do with coaching?"

Barlow responded by saying: "The Vikings made it sound like he didn't have any coaching down here. I would say to Childress, 'Don't drag us down like that.' "

But Childress said Thursday that he talked to Barlow about coming to Minnesota a while back and valued his knowledge.

"He played in this system in Tampa Bay," Childress said, referring to the West Coast system the Vikings are installing. "I'm not so sure sometimes he couldn't jump out and play for us right now, just watching him during practice. But it's nice to have that wisdom, that insight as well as the familiarity with Tarvaris."

Barlow played eight seasons in the NFL before joining the coaching staff of his alma mater. He was a teammate of Vikings quarterback Brad Johnson on the 2002 Buccaneers team that won the Super Bowl.

Barlow won't be able to stick around for training camp because of his responsibilities at Alabama State.

    In the community

Several members of the Vikings organization spent Thursday at Wenonah Community School in Minneapolis helping build a new playground that covers 2,500 square feet. Childress and his players arrived around 12:30 p.m. and worked for the final hour and a half. They also visited with kids inside the school and signed autographs.

"What ends up happening is they may get more out of it than the kids they are helping," Childress said of his players. "Stepping out of their comfort zone a little bit and getting in the classroom with fourth- and fifth-graders gives you a little perspective."

The Vikings contributed $25,000 to the project, as did Toro. The Minneapolis school district kicked in $10,000.

    Etc.

    • Ross Kolodziej, a fifth-year defensive tackle who played college football at Wisconsin when Childress was on the Badgers staff, signed a one-year contract with the Vikings. Kolodziej, 28, played the past two years with the Arizona Cardinals, starting a career-high 14 games in 2005 and recording career bests in tackles (39) and sacks (three).

    • Former Gophers kicker Rhys Lloyd is scheduled to have a tryout with the Vikings on Tuesday.

    • The Vikings are expected to announce that they will practice against Kansas City on Aug. 4 in Mankato.
