    It's Confirmed: Elling's Back!

    Brace yourself . . . he's back!

What the hell's going on? There was speculation that Elling would return, but now it's officially confirmed that the Vikes have re-signed him. He'll handle kickoff duties and "field goals longer than 52 yards." Didn't know he could handle kickoffs to begin with--and field goals longer than 52 yards? What makes anyone think he can do that when he can't even handle extra points? Maybe they were impressed with his "dual-threat" punting skills!

He can't kick field goals period, much less 52+yarders.

    He also can't kick kickoffs.

Why in the hell did we bring this horrible kicker back our team?

Well, I like the idea of bringing in someone to handle the kickoffs. That will save some wear and tear on Andersen, which I consider to be a good thing.

Maybe he figures that Elling can learn how to stay cool during a game from Andersen, and thus become a better kicker. I know Tice likes the guy, so he probably just figured this would be a good way to give him another chance without hurting his team. We'll see if it plays out that way.

So who do you guys suggest bringing in to win a game in the final seconds if the field goal is longer than 50 yards? Morten Andersen won't make it there, period. At least Elling has the leg strength to get the ball there. I like this move, it covers our bases on special teams. I think Andersen will get the job done, but he doesn't need to be doing the kickoffs also.

Elling may suck now, but who knows, maybe he will boot a 55 yarder to win a game and then everyone will love him! You never know.

I posted this on another thread earlier today, I agree with a lot of you I do not understand the Vikes thinking. I just remember last year and this preseason that he stuggled with kickoffs if he got them to the 3 yard line he was line-driving the kicks, if he gets any hang time he kicks it to the 10 yard line (I think I expressed my feeling pretty well in the earlier post).

    Elling returns as kickoff specialist

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. – The Vikings on Friday re-signed Aaron Elling to handle kickoffs Monday night in Philadelphia.

Head coach Mike Tice also considered elevating Travis Dorsch from the practice squad, but was concerned about the former fourth-round pick's ability to handle the pressure of a nationally-televised season debut on the road. Dorsch also was inconsistent in practice.

Morten Andersen struggled with his kickoffs in the season opener Sunday. The 44-year-old misfired a squib kick late in the first half, and allowed a 62-yard return on a low kick in the third quarter. Both ensuing drives ended in Dallas touchdowns.

Elling, released by the Vikings on Sept. 1 after an erratic training camp and preseason, consistently kicked off inside the 5-yard line during a workout Thursday morning at Winter Park.

The Vikings released cornerback Rhett Nelson to make room on the roster. He will be re-signed to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Elling, who handled all kicking duties for Tennessee in their opener Sunday, was waived Tuesday when the Titans signed former Vikings kicker Gary Anderson.

Vice president of football operations Rob Brzezinski called Elling’s agent, Frank Murtha, late Tuesday, and the kicker quickly boarded plane back to the Twin Cities for a second chance.

“It’s been crazy,” Elling said Thursday. “The way I was kicking (in the preseason), it was probably better at the time. (Tice) had to make a decision for the team, and I think he made a good one.”

The coaching staff hopes Elling can mature mentally under Andersen’s tutelage, and succeed him down the road.

“If it worked out that I’m here, what an amazing person to learn from,” Elling said. “The master. The guy who’s been there and done that in every situation. To be (in Minnesota) with him would be amazing.”

Elling had 74 kickoffs in 2003, averaging 59.8 yards with one touchback. He was released on the eve of the Vikings’ preseason finale in favor of Brett Conway, who was waived a week later when the Vikings signed Andersen

If I could get 2 years and 5 years probation?
Well it may be justifiable as bad as he kicks, maybe I could just get probation.

One might argue, though, that they should have brought Brett Conway back instead of Elling. Conway has been more of a kickoff specialist in his career, and if I recall correctly, was 5-11 in his career from 50 and beyond. It was the shorter FGs that Conway's consistency really stank. Oh yeah, that and the fact that Conway is a leg injury waiting to happen.

I don't have a big problem with all this. Elling has been no great shakes to this point as far as his kickoffs, so who knows, maybe Tice will cut him again after Monday night if he stinks the joint up. And Elling does have the leg to kick longer FGs, let's just hope the Vikings don't ever need one

The move may make some sense but I find it hard to believe that there is not a kicker out there who can consistently kick it into the end zone on kickoffs. Does anyone know of a current kicker who routinely gets his kickoffs at least to the goal line? I realize they moved the kickoffs back five yards several years back .. but still

From yesteryear, Ray Guy comes to mind

Actually, it wasn't moving the Kickoff back 5 yards that shortened the kickoff so drastically. That happened when they eliminated the special kicker's footballs. It used to be that teams would supply the game balls a few days in advance. The kickers would take a few of them, and run them through the clothes dryer, and do other things to soften them up, making them easier to kick farther. It was just a few years ago that the NFL eliminated that practice. Now the game balls are supplied just before game time, and are as hard as can be. That's also why you see more fumbles in rainy games now. When the footballs are manufactured, they have some kind of treatment/film on the leather that gets slick when it gets wet. The equipment managers used to do something to get rid of that. Now they can't.

I just love that we have 3 roster spots on Kickers/ Punters! Why don't we resign Sean Salisbury as a 4th QB while were at it!
