Injuries -- a connection?
The Arizona Cards and the Minnesota Vikings are showing the MOST (not the worst -- the MOST) injuries of any of the NFL teams right now.
Is it a considence that the Vikings have always had a lot of injury problems and now that problem has moved on with Denny Green to Arizona and his mentor, Mike Tice is continuing with the tradition here?
I wonder if this is just fate or if there is some connection with coaching styles?
Just a passing thought...
Anyone got information rather than just a hunch?
Re: Injuries -- a connection?
I don't think so......injuries happen....they happen all over the league. Some schemes will put certain players at greater risk. Remember the beating Patrick Ramsey took under Spurrier's system? Bottomline.....injuries are part of the game and the Vikings, Cardinals, Jets, and Packers are just a few of the teams that are hurting right now. The sad part is that injuries are really becoming more prevalent each year and its not always the most talented team that wins the super bowl.
Re: Injuries -- a connection?
I really don't think coaching styles make that big an impact on the number of injuries. However, the way a coaching staff deals with it makes all the difference. The only way a team can combat injuries is having good depth at each and every position - easier said than done - this is one of those things that really separates the good coaching staffs from the mediocre or bad ones (and we have a bad one). I find it interesting how the really good teams just suck it up and play through it. They always seem to have some unknown step in and pick up the slack. It seems this Vikings team dwells on injuries, and it becomes a self-fufilling prophecy that we're going to be exposed.
Re: Injuries -- a connection?
I got news for you boys....some of those injuries are bogus. Noone wants to play with a "tweek" when the team sucks and is getting blown out. If the team is winning, a bunch of those guys will suddenly get better.
Re: Injuries -- a connection?
Thats a nice post. I agree, depth & adjustments play a large role. This very fact exposes coaching weaknesses, personel decisions, and management's financial motivations.

It is kind of a coincidence, kinda creepy actually but I really don't think it has anything to do with the coaching style. Injuries happen all the time to every team. We just happen to have gotten the short end of the stick when it comes to injuries this year. Life just isn't fair!!

I do not think they are really all that more prevelant. Injuries have always happened. I mean, even the great Jerry Rice missed a season in his prime, Steve Young went down to a concussion and never played again, the undefeated Dolphins were using a back-up QB who became a starter, Unitas lost his job to injury ... they have happened for years, you just remember the recent ones more I think.
Although, I will say that more players take their time in getting back now because they do not want to risk millions of dollars getting re-injured. Twenty years ago Matt Birk would have payed and taken his chances, these days there is far too much at risk.
Re: Injuries -- a connection?
Great point.......the business aspect is in full force. A player gets injured in the first game of the year and still gets paid.....whats the incentive to compromise your future?
Re: Injuries -- a connection?
Injuries are part of the game in football as unfortunate as that sounds. The Patriots are also getting hit hard by the injury bug. Injuries are independant of the coaching staff or philosophy, look how injuries hurt the Panthers last year too.
Re: Injuries -- a connection?
I guess we can all find connections and exceptions. I guess when I posted this I was thinking more about the "conditioning" prior to the season.
