I have a three tier hierarchy.

    1. Vikings
    2. Saints
    3. Dolphins

    #1 trumps #2 etc.
Been following the Vikings since the '60s, Saints and Dolphins since the '70s.
I enjoy following many individual players through college and the NFL too.

But, if the Vikings were ever to leave Minnesota I can't imagine following any team.
I've watched them lose four SBs and many other crucial games...the Vikings are the fuel for my NFL passion.
I grew up playing hockey and watching the MN North Stars and the MN Fighting Saints...when the Saints folded I watched the Stars diligently....when the Stars left for Dallas I haven't watched a single NHL game. I can't imagine not watching the NFL, but I would seriously consider boycotting it if the Vikings ever left Minnesota.

Like I said, 2nd favorite teams are for the weak and unfaithful.

However, there are certain players, coaches, and organizations I respect.
Steelers owners (Rooneys), Bill Cowher, and Billicheck.
And players who are good people off the field too and have a great work ethic on it.

    You're high Ultra.
    If it's a hierarchy it's legitimate.
If you bounce around based on how one team is doing then it's for the weak.
I lived in Iowa at one point in my life and there were people that liked the Vikings, Bears, Chiefs, or Rams...based on how the team performs.
This is getting into the 'real' fan or the 'true' fan argument.
I've followed the Vikings longer than many fans have existed and held season tickets at the old met and have traveled days in developing countries and crossed borders just to watch them play on a miniscule televison set and you question loyalty?
    That is funny.
I have three teams, based on a hierarchy.
Vikings always first and Vikings fuel my loyalty to the whole NFL.
    Your premise is dead wrong.

Re: IF you had to root for any other team...

I've always been a Vikings fan..
    For long, long time.
Last years Love Boat burned me, bad.
For the first time, I was ashamed to be a fan of the Vikings.
I have no problems being a die hard fan of the Vikes when they are 0-16.
Losing by 50+ points a game.
But when it came to be off the field issues..
    And this big?
    Honestly, made me sick.

After that incident, I decided to follow another team that I've always liked, but never followed, and that team was the Bengals.
Even went so far as to buying me a personalized Bengals stitched jersey last year.

Since I've had time to settle down after the Boat issue, I still follow the Vikes.
But I refuse to be burned so bad.
What happens on or off the field, doesn't matter so much to me.
I'm going to enjoy watching and following football (it's my passion), whether the Vikes or Stripes win or lose.
Vegans are eating the rainforests. =(

Re: IF you had to root for any other team...

Now since you went there, I guess this is how it is..

I am a lifelong Viking fan.. My father is a lifelong Bear fan having ben born and raised in Chicago.. You have to respect a guy who has been a fan for the same team in its highs and lows for 56 years..

We have a mutual agreement.. When the Vikes aren't playing the Bears, I root for the Bears.. He does the same for the Vikes.. If they are in a battle for the division crown, we root for our own team regardless of who they are playing..

If the Vikings are playing good, he calls me up and says "Damn they are looking good" just like he has this preseason.. I will do the same with him.. So I guess if I have to choose, it would be the Bears out of respect for my Pops..

Bengals huh? Ever heard the term "frontrunner"?

I'll always love the Vikes, no matter what bullshit the players pull on or off the field. I don't really have any other teams I like, but once the Vikes are bumped from contention I start rooting for any NFC North teams that might be left; last year it was the Bears. You get a certain familiarity by watching these teams twice a year and I always want our division to be tough and well respected throughout the League. With the exception of the Packers, it appears that the Black and Blue Division might just be back!
    I am a dipshit!!!

    Let me get this straight:

You first write, "But when it came to be off the field issues..
    And this big?
    Honestly, made me sick."

But then you end with, "What happens on or off the field, doesn't matter so much to me."

I am not tracking you here.
Are you saying that after the Love Boat thingy the off the field stuff does not bother you?
Yes it was a huge blackeye.
But how can you just drop the entire team like that?
The entire history of the Vikings?

How about you cheer for the logo on the jersey and not the name on the back of it?
