Despite a top-five pass rush, last year’s Vikes finished No. 16 in defensive passer rating. That’s more bad news: Of the 39 teams who’ve won the Super Bowl, just four have allowed their opponents to pass the ball with comparable efficiency.
The average Super Bowl team finishes between No. 6 and No. 7 in scoring defense. The average champion finishes a bit better than No. 5. Eighty-two percent of teams that are good enough to make the title game finish in the top 10.

Last year’s Vikings finished No. 13. Respectable? Certainly. Title-worthy? Not really.

Simply shamefull that we are that low, especially with our DL.
Anyone still think Leslie would make a great HC?

Lets not forget, our Defensive Leader missed 13 games last year.
He's only 1 player, I understand that, but that position was abused all year long by Opposing Offenses.

As for Leslie, I haven't really seen him do anything to deserve a HC shot.
Until we can force an O into a pass only mode because of our stout run defense and then absolutely close the door on the O's passing game with pass breakups, sacks, and INTs... what has he done other then drive the bus?
I hear ya on the injury to EJ issue, however, even our QB's came through to a point when it came to injuries, not sure why we should have that big of a drop off when it comes to our MLB.

Long story short, just not buying it.
Coaches across the league overcome issues like that.
    Why the hell can't ours?

That was a great explanation of why the Vikings didn't win the Super Bowl last year.

    Now, how about this year?
When the age of the Vikings came to a close, they must have sensed it. Probably, they gathered together one evening, slapped each other on the back and said, "Hey, good job." - Jack Handey [Deep Thoughts]

The title of the article should have been, 'Why the Vikings didn't win the superbowl last year'.
It's ok to base future projections on past performance.
But it's rediculous to believe this team won't or can't improve.

Improvement in special teams and 3rd down conversions will make this team a contender.

We will have to play some games to find out. Not sit at a computer and analyze last years stats, then project them on this years team.
What takes a quarterback to the next level is not arm strength or mobility or any of that stuff. Its the ability to play on critical downs. Manage third downs, or red zones or four-minute or two-minute situations"

Scoring on D involves a bit of luck.
I would look at a comparison of turnovers on those top teams compare to ours in addition to scoring.

Yes, I would love to see us score more on D.

Bleacher Report sucks...... I think anyone can write for them as long as you know how to use the internet.

Yep ... you just have to sign up and you can start writing.
Some of the people on there are not that bad, but most of them suck.

Re: How Close to a Title Are the Vikings? Not as Close as You Think

    Let's look at pass D:
#1 Although Sharper was a 32 yr old vet, he had 69 tackles 1INT starting all 16 games, Tyrell a 23 yr old rookie, 31 tackles, 1 INT starting 7 games.
Do the math, who will be the better player this year? i.e. yes, Tyrell may have given up some big plays, but the guy is a rookie.
I expect some major 2nd year improvement.

#2 M Williams was new to the Vikes, injured during TC, didn't practice, missed 7 games. Vikes went 7-2 when he returned.

#2 Griffin is going into his 4th season, is getting picked on because of Winfield.
I've read he's really dedicating himself on and off the field this year.
    I expect improvement.

#3 EJ was out, hurt our short passing D and blitzing.
EJ had 4.5 sacks in 2007, up from 3 in 2006.
With the addition of Allen, he could of had 6 or 7 and the pro-bowl this year.

#4 Greenway was in his 2nd full season and had probowl #'s before EJ's injury.

#5 Vikes need to settle on a starting nickle back, this is a weak spot. Since most teams can't run they use spread formations.
    Playing musical chairs doesn't help.
Once this is done things should improve.

Vikes passing D made a big leap from 31st in 2006 to 18th even though opponents are passing 59% percent of the plays, only Ravens and Chargers have higher.

    MOST IMPORTANT!
Vikes are #5 in fewest passing TD's allowed with 15.

IMO, passing yds/gm isn't the best stat for ranking.
There are reason why the Vikes passing D should be ranked higher.
And several more reasons why the Vikes passing D will be better this year.

EJ Henderson to Napo shouldn't be that much of a drop off? From our defensive leader to some has been off the streets? Come on Marrdro, you know how important a Mike is, especially ours...
