Harvin, who has suffered from severe migraines, was not on the field for the start of practice. He was seen talking to head athletic trainer Eric Sugarman outside the locker room at Winter Park and then jogged onto the field to watch practice. A few minutes later, Harvin vomited and then fell to the ground.
Practice continued as the team’s medical staff tended to him. After about 10 minutes, a police car and ambulance from the Hennepin County Medical Center arrived and EMTs tended to Harvin as practice stopped and players watched.
Harvin missed two weeks of training camp while dealing with migraines after the death of his grandmother. Harvin has suffered from severe migraines since he was 10. He missed a number of practices and one game last season, his rookie season, while dealing with them. Harvin said the severe effects include vomiting and loss of vision.Zeus wrote:

Re:Harvin collapses in practice
I am more worried about this then Favre making it through the season. This is not good. Harvin is the man.
It seems crazy that the problems were not bad in college. I would bet he was smoking. Now with the rules he can't and they are getting out of control.
Sad. I feel for you Percy.

Re:Harvin collapses in practice
Migraine attacks may be triggered by:
Allergic reactions
Bright lights, loud noises, and certain odors or perfumes
Physical or emotional stress <--- HELLO!!!!!
Changes in sleep patterns
Smoking or exposure to smoke
Skipping meals
Alcohol
Tension headaches
Foods containing tyramine (red wine, aged cheese, smoked fish, chicken livers, figs, and some beans), monosodium glutamate (MSG) or nitrates (like bacon, hot dogs, and salami)
Other foods such as chocolate, nuts, peanut butter, avocado, banana, citrus, onions, dairy products, and fermented or pickled foods.
long exposures to light from computer screen, video screens, and tv.
and
Several studies have found some migraines are triggered by changes in weather. One study noted 62% of the subjects thought weather was a factor but only 51% were sensitive to weather changes.[32] Among those whose migraines did occur during a change in weather, the subjects often picked a weather change other than the actual weather data recorded. Most likely to trigger a migraine were, in order:
Temperature mixed with humidity. High humidity plus high or low temperature was the biggest cause.
Significant changes in weather
Changes in barometric pressure
The source is Wikipedia, but Mayoclinic.com validates almost everything here.

Re:Harvin collapses in practice
This is definitely a concern as it seems to be something they just cannot get rid of.
I think the thought that marijuana in college may have helped him avoid the problems could have some credence.
My brother suffers from migraine headaches ... and I know that he would do pretty much anything to get rid of them when they come on.

AFAIK there is little or no medical proof that marijuana helps, so the majority of the medical community doesn't endorse it. Most of the reports of it helping come second hand. However - there have been very few actual studies done on its effects on migraines, so it is eniterly possible, and from the sheer volume of reports of it helping, I think there may be something to it.This is definitely a concern as it seems to be something they just cannot get rid of.

Plus medicinal marijuna HAS been proven effective at relieving other kinds of pain and ailments. At this point I would be willing to give it a try.Zeus wrote:

Re:Harvin collapses in practice
That's scary. I hope he gets better and finds a way to manage the pain and frequency of his migraines so it doesn't end his career.
I've been hospitalized for migraines before, and it is absolutely miserable. I don't know how he even tries to play football. The amateur doctors calling into KFAN with their suggestions is ridiculous. As if the combined staff of the Mayo Clinic and team doctors don't already know the treatment options. One guy had it right though, people need to stop thinking it will be cured. Their best hope is to find a way to get it under control.

Re:Harvin collapses in practice
I am sure he will be ok. Maybe he can back too soon. Been going through a lot recently with the family member passing away and camp starting up. Lots of pressure on the young man.
We're bringing purple back.

=Z=Migraines now affecting Harvin's career
August, 19, 2010
By Kevin Seifert
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- As recently as last fall, only a relative handful of people were aware that Percy Harvin has suffered from debilitating migraine headaches since he was 10 years old. That group included his family, some friends and those close to the University of Florida's football program.
Even the Minnesota Vikings, who made him the No. 22 overall pick of the 2009 draft, have admitted they were not fully informed about the depth of the issue.
There should be no question now, however -- not after Harvin collapsed on the Vikings practice field, was briefly unresponsive and required emergency medical attention Thursday afternoon. After costing him one game last season, migraines have already contributed to Harvin missing most of training camp this summer. If anything, the episodes have increased in frequency since he entered the NFL and it's fair to wonder how they will impact his career in the long term.
Thanks to Josdin for the awesome sig!
