Sure would be nice to see what a GM could do with picks like that. The sixth pick is a gonner as it negates the one they gave for Dnabb but two 4th rounders is nice.

I'd use both of them to move up into the second/third if possible and get a few guys you are targeting instead of working BPA in the 4th.

1rst WR - Blackmon
2nd CB - Only if Cook doesnt' come back. If he does, take DT Alameda Ta'amu
3rd - OG - Zietler or Washington (one of them should be there)
4th - MLB - Cole. Just in case Jasper isn't gonna be right
4th - S - Iloka, Smith or Allen. One of them should be there.
4th - OT - Sanders or an Allen type

Use the rest of them to add depth at possibly CB, TE (Sauce retiring) and maybe RB if AD looks like he might not get 100% by 2013.


FA's I'd target.......

Raid the Chargers of Dombrowski (LT) and Vincent Jackson (WR).

Offense would look like this.

Blackmon----Dombrowski - Berger - Sully - Johnson - Load---Jackson
Rudy---------Ponder------------Shanc
------------------------Toby


Defense would look like this.

Hussain--------------Sanford
Asher----------------Cook
Chad------ EJ------Griff
JA - Kdubb - Ta'amu - Rob

Thats alot of playmakers on the field on both sides of the ball.

I think both 4th round picks should be used individually rather than wasting one to move up one round.
I hate wasting picks to move up and get someone you may have been able to get later anyway.
But that's what Spielman is likely to do.
There should be some good talent remaining in the fourth round.
I'm ok with combining late round picks there seems to be more misses than hits once we get to the 6th round.

I'm a little thick in the head sometimes so forgive me, but you lost me when you said that using a 4th to target a kid in the second or 3rd would be a wasted pick.

Rationale for doing it is that there is a kid you want, but you know he is going to be taken ahead of you, so in essence you wouldn't be able to get him later.

I think this staff, since the Wilfs upgraded the scouting department, has done a good job of finding and retaining players with the 2007 class being an exception.

If they did such a good job with their picks after the first round we wouldnt be in the poor shape we are in terms of starting talent and overall depth.

We need a GM and we need all of the picks we can get. Combining picks to move up is not the thing to do when your roster is as shallow as this one is.

Extra 4th round picks at the very tail end of the 4th round are not exactly going to help us magically rebuild.

You also cannot trade compensation picks.

Marr, I like the Plan...gimme some alternatives for Jackson and Dombrowski. Also, if you are suggesting Jackson, why not go with Claiborne?

There is no chance that Vincent Jackson is anywhere other than San Diego next season.

Even if he is ... why would he come to Minnesota?

The problem with free agent fixes is that you have to convince free agents to come to the Vikings over other teams that are much closer to winning now with similar needs.

I like the extra draft picks and hope we use them instead of trying to package the ones we are allowed to trade (cannot trade the compensatory picks). I would like to see the talent infusion of six young players all taken in the first four rounds of the draft. That should be quite a boost for this team.

Come back from fairy tale land. There is no way they let Jackson walk and Dombrowski is no better than Charlie Johnson. In fact San Diego claimed Jared Gaither off the waiver wire when McNeal went down just so they didn't have to go with Dombrowski. If you want to target a tackle then target Gaither who appears to be healthy and playing solid ball.

Personally I believe it would be really dumb to go after a receiver with our top pick. This draft is loaded with big receivers. Blackmon, Floyd, Alshon, Dwight Jones, Marvin McNutt, Tommy Streeter, possibly Mohamed Sanu, Juron Criner, Reuben Randle, Jeff Fuller and that is without listing the smaller speedy guys in the mold of DeSean Jackson/Lee Evans.

Cornerback is a spot that looks good but is a big need for a lot of teams. There is a very good chance that Claiborne, Kirkpatrick, Jenkins, Dennard, and possibly Minnifield are all off the board by the second round.

You want to spend money in free agency then do it in the secondary because putting your eggs in Chris Cook's basket is a big risk. Plus Sanford and Hussain have both been terrible this year. While I do not hate Asher Allen he is much better off on the inside and really struggles on the outside.

I do not see them re-signing EJ. He is getting old and has had trouble with that surgically repaired leg - two years after the surgery. That is not a good sign.

All I know is that this team needs to lose to Chicago. Stay at #3 and you probably get trade offers to drop back for a team wanting RG3. Win and you might be looking at the 6th pick.

This is not time to go spending in FA again. That was tried and it put us into the salary cap problems we are having right now.

The team needs to stay with the youth movement and use the draft to fill the skill positions. Now for the OL and the interior of the DL I can see getting some FA talent and also to fill for depth but not the big ticket FA's that are going to take dollars away from the team.

You build through the draft and nothing helps with building better than an abundance of draft picks and a front office that knows what to do with them. And right now we don't have the latter.

At least last year they broke the trend of bringing in 'has been' free agents, with one notable exception, and began a new tradition of picking up 'never been' free agents!

I agree, building a winner through free agency rarely works as evidenced in Philly and the Skins.
The cap hit can hurt you for years to come as evidenced by the current state of the Vikings.

It seems, the key in building a team is mostly from finding starters and good backups in your middle round draft picks. Many good teams seem to find gems in their mid to late round picks.
