    Harris back in the middle

Vikings linebacker: ‘It’s a new beginning for me’

    MANKATO —

It’s a new season, a new position with a new head coach for Napoleon Harris. But he’s back at his old position, with an old friends as his position coach.

“I’m definitely more comfortable in my second year here,” Harris said. “It’s a new beginning for me.”

Harris is returning to middle linebacker, the position he held as a rookie with the Oakland Raiders. In 2002, the first-round draft choice started 13 games and helped the Raiders reach the Super Bowl. He played in all 16 games the following season, splitting time in the middle and outside, and then suffered a knee injury that plagued for part of the 2004 season.

Last season was tough on Harris, on and off the field. He had to deal with deaths of two family members and his best friend. He was part of the trade for Randy Moss, which he said haunted him.

“I was treated like a stepchild,” he said.

Once he arrived in Minnesota, Harris thought he would be playing middle linebacker, but then the team acquired Sam Cowart to play that position, shifting Harris outside. He felt under-appreciated and misused.

So while his playing time slipped, he kept to himself, rather than speak his mind. The coaching staff said he was injured, but he said he wasn’t.

This summer, he’s talking, excited about the possibilities.

“I wasn’t suited to the scheme (last season),” Harris said. “I like middle linebacker and the leadership role. I take pride in that, and I want to work hard to earn the respect of my teammates.”

Another bonus is working with linebackers coach Fred Pagac, who was his position coach back in his rookie season with Oakland.

“He knows how to coach football,” Harris said. “I had the most success with him. He knows how to appreciate what you do.”

Good, hopefully this will be the year that he turns it around for us.. I agree with him, that last year being involved in the Randy Moss trade kinda labeled him before he even got here.. Now we will see what he can do..

This is good to hear. Hopefully he steps up and solidifies the position we've had the most trouble with.

Because Meathead was the HC, and Cottrell was the DC.. I think that explains everything..

Our last regime didn't know how to win. They relied too much on big plays, and not a steady scheme and gameplan...

And that is how it should have been.

Not only did Cowart place 2nd in leading the Vikings with tackles (85 total, 72 solo in 15 games), 2nd only to Winfield (98 total, 89 solo in 16 games), but he brought experience & leadership to that role.
