Griffin hurting after Friday’s practice

Vikings coach Brad Childress confirmed rookie cornerback Cedric Griffin has moved ahead of Fred Smoot on the depth chart and therefore should take over at right corner. But it’s not a given that will happen.

Griffin remains listed as questionable on the injury report after suffering a stinger on Sunday at Miami and Childress said Griffin had, “a little episode,”
during Friday’s practice.

He is joined by right right guard Artis Hicks (sprained ankle) and right tackle Marcus Johnson (sprained ankle) as questionable on the injury report for Sunday’s game against Arizona.

Childress said both Griffin and Smoot will play and that it “depends on what outfit is on the field,” meaning that Smoot will move into the nickel role. Griffin had been used in nickel situations.

Asked if the Vikings had made a change with the first team at right corner, Childress said: “Yes we have. … I think the best thing is that the guys who give us the best chance to win are on the field. It’s on merit and Cedric has played well. Therefore, he goes to the front of the line.”

As for Hicks and Johnson, it’s clear Hicks did almost no work this week, making it likely Jason Whittle will start at right guard. Johnson would seem to have a better chance of playing Sunday
