Greenway on verge of signing
Second-round pick Jackson reaches terms with Vikings

Vikings first-round draft pick Chad Greenway is expected to sign his contract at the team's headquarters in Eden Prairie this morning. Later today, the linebacker will report on time as training camp opens in Mankato.
Meanwhile, quarterback Tarvaris Jackson, the Vikings' second-round pick, agreed to a four-year deal Wednesday night.
Greenway, the 17th pick in April's NFL draft out of the University of Iowa, has agreed to terms on a multiyear deal, a person close to the negotiations said. His agent, Marvin Demoff, was completing details of the contract with the Vikings on Wednesday night.
Demoff did not return phone messages.
Reached on his cell phone Wednesday afternoon, Greenway said, "I just want to get in on time."
Last year's 17th pick, linebacker David Pollack, agreed to a five-year deal with the Cincinnati Bengals worth up to $12.95 million and which included about $7.1 million in guaranteed bonuses. Thus far, first-round picks are netting an increase of about 10 percent over players in the same draft slots last year.
Jackson has a chance to become the Vikings' quarterback of the future. He passed for 7,839 yards and 67 touchdowns during his three seasons at Division I-AA Alabama State.
"Tarvaris made clear that he would be in camp on time," his agent, Joel Segal, said. "It was important for him to start learning the system during those two-a-day practices."
Segal declined to provide details of Jackson's four-year contract, but based on the Vikings' other second-round deals, it is believed to be worth about $3 million and to include a $1.1 million signing bonus. It also is believed to contain escalator clauses that would increase his yearly compensation if he becomes a starter.
Offensive tackle Adam Terry of the Baltimore Ravens was the last pick in the second round last year, and he received a four-year contract that included a $700,000 signing bonus. But quarterback contracts are more complicated and include more money. For instance, quarterback Charlie Frye was the third pick in the third round (67th overall) last year, and the Cleveland Browns signed him to four-year contract that included an $800,000 signing bonus and incentives worth up to $3 million, if he becomes a starter.
Jackson sounded relieved to have these contract negotiations behind him.
"I'm very excited," he said in a phone interview. "It was very important to report on time. I couldn't imagine missing any days of camp. … I'm here in Minnesota. I'm going to get a ride down with teammates.
"Me, being the young guy, I can't afford to miss nothing, and I don't want to get off on the wrong foot. Your teammates would understand if you hold out. But at the same time, if you can prevent it, it's best to do so."
Coach Brad Childress was happy to get Jackson in the fold.
"Tarvaris understands that every rep is important at training camp, and we're glad he's on board as camp starts," Childress said.
Briefly: The Vikings agreed to terms with fullback Brandon Jones, a rookie from Purdue, and waived three players: cornerback Ukee Dozier, wide receiver Kelvin Kight and running back Taurean Henderson.
