Franchise QB

I know this is premature and could also be lumped in with ten thousand other threads, but.......after grandpa unlaces for the last time and rides off into the sunset on his Allis Chalmers who is going to take the torch and lead this team?

I haven't thrown TJ under the bus yet and I don't think Sage will ever be a super bowl caliber QB. It's not a knock on him it's just he's missing that certain something that franchise QB's possess. Oh ya, the word I'm looking for...talent. TJ might come around under Brett, but I think Sage has peaked and what you see is what you get.


That being said do we start over and draft the next experiment or take are chances/ go all in with TJ. I'm kind of torn but the bottom line is that the clock is running out on Brett and we can't afford a long drawn out rebuilding era while we have the best running back in the league in his prime.

I don't think its whether we'll take a chance on TJ, it will all depend if TJ takes a chance on us.
His contract is over after this season, him coming back is not a given. After the way we handled the QB situation, I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't want to be back.
I'd be all for giving Tj a shot, then trying to draft someone with a first or second pick.
Get perhaps a Matt Schuab situation, where if TJ does pan out, we can trade whoever we draft away for more than he's worth.

I've been wondering about this as well.
We have a very unstable QB situation going into next year.
We have grandpa Favre that may or may not decide on retiring until TC is almost over.
We have TJ who may or may not sign with us.
Lastly we have Sage Allspice who is an average backup style QB.


We tried to trade TJ already, so who knows if he wants to sign with us again.
I think he will if he feels this is his best shot to play (which it may be).


Our record is going to be too good (knock on wood) to draft a top prospect.
That leaves us with a few options:

1.
Sign a FA QB like Kellen Clemens or Brodie Croyle to come in and compete with Sage and draft a 3rd string project QB in the mid-late rounds.

2.
Draft a guy in rounds 1-3 that we think can compete and at least be a solid #2.

3.
Trade picks and players for a QB that we think can be a franchise guy.

Are there more realistic scenarios that I'm missing?
What would you guys prefer?

I don't think we have many holes to fill out side of DT, Safety, RB, DE. I say we trade up and draft a taylor Mays in the first, and take a chance on a QB like Snead in the 2nd. We should then have a 4th and 5th pick to address the other position. Taking 7 picks this draft will be a waste of picks. We simply do not have the room and our roster is too young to turn over.

A defense with

Mays, Madieu (Johnson rotating) would be a feared secondary.
I think Favre comes back 1 more year.

We won't be able to trade up high enough to get Taylor Mays (likely top 10 pick) without giving up that second you are talking about.

My train of thought on this is as follows:

a.
I think our current starter will be back next year.

b.
I think we will see a contract done on TJ just as soon as the Chiller gets his done.

c.
I think we will draft another QB next year.

Lets look at it from that perspective and assume all of that comes true.

With our current starter coming back next year there is no real rush to push for another starter/primary backup because of his track record for starts.


Additionally, you will have TJ under contract.
He has proven, if nothing else, that he can come in off the bench and win.

This will/would allow you to not gamble and risk all of your picks by trading up on a cat in the first round if you don't think one of them is worth it.
Look for a scheme guy that fits in the latter rounds and develop him, like all teams do.

Think about the ramifications of having a VY, JR or cat like that on your roster sucking up gauranteed dollars, wasted draft picks and nothing but a bust when you could have a cat like TJ, cheap, got you some nice reps, and not a big loss (cost wise) if he moves on.
