Nope. I agree with you ultra. I think that once the opposition prepares for it, and includes schemes to mess with our less-than-formidable linebacking crew, it could get ugly. But hey, what have we got to lose?

Re: Fox NFL Blitz report - the 3-4

i think if we keep mixing a 3-4 and 4-3 together we can cause confusion on the offensive line, in that game against the bears we got at least 4 sacks i believe and we were making the line work really hard at keeping a clean pocket. when we were just using the 4-3 we were hardly ever getting any pressure on the QB so i don't see this as a bad move unless the offense keeps burning us because of it.

    Thanks Josdin

You have to take everything these guys have been doing for months and throw it out the window and trasition to this in a week.

(I realize what we have been doing thus far is not working either)

Transitioning this team to a 3-4 in the season could be a trainwreck.

    I would not do this.
Maybe, but with Udeze and Spencer out, Cottrell is kind of limited on large d-line personnel. James is really the only guy left that can step up and play solid minutes in a 4-3 (or am I missing some guys). There are a lot of healthy linebackers for the 3-4.

I would expect to see a combo of both formations, depending on how much time the D is on the field. They've got to rotate personnel or these boys will wear down or worse yet, get hurt.

One other point on learning the schemes. Put the guys in who are making an impact and scheme around them. Against Green Bay, a faster more athletic defense that can pressure and stay on the little dump screens may be a better package. Both Green and Davenport are hurt right?

Linebackers may be healthy, but can they carry this Defense?

tastywaves, we still have Darrion Scott and i believe Spencer Johnson can play some DE as well, and James as you pointed out.

    Thanks Josdin

Re: Fox NFL Blitz report - the 3-4

I was very happy with the 3-4 this weekend and think if the Williams boys continue to put pressure and you mix up the fourth rusher from the LBs it can be very effective with the speed we have at the LB position. Playing the 3-4 keeps DT and EJ from finding themselves out of position so often and lets them rely on their natural speed. I think the 3-4 makes our LBs better and makes or defense better, at least right now with all the dings up front.

Isn't that what Pat was use to in Buffalo??

    He played 3-4 didn't he?

Good point, we don't exactly rate in the upper echelon of linebackers. But we got a bunch of them, they are supposed to be athletic, they are taking up roster spots and they are paid to deliver.

My point was more around basing the formation more on the personnel currently available rather than the fear of learning somehting different. I gotta believe at this point in time with the injuries that we have more "athletes" on the field with a 3-4. But, I would also expect to see a fair amount of missed assignments/lane/hole responsibility similar to what we've seen all season with the 4-3.

We'll probably see both with Green Bay, see whats effective, use our superior coaching intellect and make the appropriate adjustments to ensure Favre is dazed and confused with their RB's struggling to make 2ypc.
