    Everson Griffen moving to LB

    http://min.scout.com/2/1100463.html

Everson Griffen got his first taste of Mike Singletary as his position coach Monday when the Vikings had Griffen sliding to linebacker for some work there.

The move was made on an experimental basis , but Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said he wants to incorporate Griffen as a linebacker into some special defensive packages.

“We have some packages where we want him to stand up sometimes and we thought this would give him an opportunity to get comfortable doing that when we go to some of those packages during the course of the year,” Frazier said.

Sorry Rick! Keep up the good work.

I would rather them work on stopping the pass? :side:

Might be an interesting move. I think he would be a great 3-4 OLB, but in the 4-3 he might not have the mobility to move around. Maybe on blitz or running schemes he can stand up. lets hope this one works out.

i see it more of him getting used to playing standing up gives us versitility in D play calling by having him start at the DE spot but fade into the secondary and have the knowledge to play at a high level while in coverage.

also a good indication that our depth at linebacker is rather shallow.

I love that they are mixing it up. A lot of different looks.

They're gonna have to mix it up. Singletary is a great LB coach, but we aren't giving him a whole lot of depth to work with.

Sorry Rick! Keep up the good work.

That's my thought as well. They need personnel that can play both LB & DL positions to bolster the depth charts.

Re: Everson Griffen moving to LB

I kinda look at this as a possible indication of a a concern and a couple of encouraging things: 1) concern over Erin Henderson and Onatolu, basically WLB. 2) an indication that Griffen is a possible x-factor type of player, one of those two or three guys needed critical to winning Teams because of their versatility and ability to play the game at a high level in multiple positions. 3) an encouraging development that this coaching staff is not going to approach this Team with rigidity...meaning, they will adjust their strategies to the players on the Team; putting them in positions which they are best suited, something Musgrave and Frazier stated early.

I have previously stated concern over #1, which was pointed out in Mark Craig's Blog (http://www.startribune.com/sports/vikings/blogs/128588078.html) today. Pagac is clearly going to blitz much more than our recent DC ( ,this is one to keep an eye on...but, I gotta think the idea is to blitz him...don't think too many RBs can handle him.

Re: Everson Griffen moving to LB

Thanks for the news, although the tittle of the thread is a little misleading. As the article says: "The move was made on an experimental basis". They are just trying him out there to see what he can do.

When I first saw the tittle I was like "Hell no! Just as Everson was starting to look real good at end we had to start messing it up!", but then I read the article and it changed to something positive instead.

I love that the coaches are thinking outside the box!

Unfortunately, this also gives me a feeling that the linebacker depth is week (but it could also be that the end depth is strong). Regardless, we have to have some faith that the starting linebackers will stay healthy. If they do stay healthy the whole year, we could have a very dominant linebacker trio.

Maybe means we'll see some 3-4 packages?
