    The Dome

Being an out-of-state Vikes fan who has never been to a home game, viewing from afar, I don't like the HHM Dome.
    It's not the Dome itself.
It is the playing indoors thing.
I know some of you probably love the Dome, and I mean no disrespect.
The facts are that the Vikes home playoff record in that building is 4-3 with big upset losses to the Falcons and Bears.
The Vikes playoff record at the old Met is 7-4.
I believe when the Vikes moved inside they lost a big part of their identity and playing indoors takes away some of the home field advantage, especially when warm weather teams visit.
A huge part of my initial attraction to this team was playing in the snow and all the steam jutting out from players facemasks.
Football was meant to be played outside.
Hey, who am I to say you've got to sit outside and freeeeeeze your little tushy off in Jan.
    I would.
    So just a poll:
Would you rather them play indside, or oudside?
    No retractable roof!
    Just indside or outside.

I live in N. H. and it doesn't get quite as cold as Minny, but it does get close.
I have/ do participate in freezing cold outdoor activities.

Playing indoors is warm and comfortable.
    It is louder.
It gives us a much bigger home field advantage.
    It's warm.
    No snow.
I am so glad we play in a dome.

    Quick question:
If we had a retractable roof could we close it and open it at will?
For example, lets say in December the Packers are coming to town, could we close it, and then next week when the Dolphin come up from Miami, leave it open.
That would be pretty cool and definitely give us a huge advantage.
Leave it open against teams that pass, close it for teams that run.

    Re: The Dome

I was 10 when they opened the dome, and hadn't been to any games at the met. While it may make a slight difference to warm weather teams, we are not the only cold weather city with a dome stadium, retr. roof or not. While they lost the ability to play outdoors, there is a big advantage as far as noise goes. I don't know the numbers, but i would be willing to bet there are as many or more false start penalties as the other indoor facilities, and more then the outdoor ones. That includes the old cookie cutter stadiums like 3 rivers, the vet and the one in cincinnati(the name escapes me). I think you would be hard pressed to find anyone that 'loves' the dome, as far as the game goes, but i do think the fans have been spoiled for the last 26+ years.

Part of me thinks there may have been fewer sellouts if we played outdoors. There are alot of other things people can do in this state outside, but they go to the games because they are inside. Personally, we have no toys and i don't fish or hunt, so i would be going to the games if i could.

OFF TOPIC: The noise level in '87 when the twins won the series, rivaled that of a 747 jumbo jet taking off. That meant it was louder then a rock concert, and a few other very loud events.

I don't think so, because 'they' decide whether it will be open or closed a few days in advance. The opposing team needs time to pack extra clothes, jackets etc. And, we would want it open for green bay. I don't think it's a game by game basis, it's weather based.
    September and October= OPEN
Nov. and Dec. open, unless there is snow in the forecast.

Being Canadian, I love outdoor football.
Also, I don't know if it's been mentioned on this site, but the Bills want the dome open this weekend in Toronto (with Miami coming) but the league won't let them.

I am glad you brought this up.

In the past, we have had this debate and it is usually a pretty good debate on both side.

As for me, football is an outdoor sport....period!

    Re: The Dome

    1. I would not buy season tickets anymore. I like being comfortable watching a game. If it was outdoors I would rather sit at home and be comfortable during the winter months. I am sure many would agree. Ticket sales would be worse than they are now.

    2. I think the new stadium should be retractable.

    3. People rip on the dome but I love it. Always have, always will. It gets so loud in there. I have been to many stadiums. Nothing compares to the noise level at the dome.

    4. I want to have Super Bowls again. Lamblow will never host one.

    5. We freeze enough during the tailgates. You like the elements, enjoy them there and at away games like me.

    Re: The Dome

In Minnesota it really needs to be a retractable roof stadium. Being indoors on a warm, sunny day is almost as intolerable as being outdoors on a subzero day. A retractable roof stadium would be a huge boost to the state's economy and to the Twin Cities. If the biggest mall in America is the Mall of America based in the Twin Cities, then surely a retractable roof stadium is not too awesome for the Twin Cities.

Otherwise, it sadly looks like it will be outdoors in Los Angeles. *barf*
