Elite?! We ranked dead last in pass defense.
Yeah ... we are soooo Elite we finished 20th in total defense this year. Hell, we have not had and "elite" defense in 13 years. We had a really good defense last year when we finished 8th in the league, but since 1994 we have only finished in the top 10 in defense that one time, and 10 of the last 13 years we were 20th or worse. We have not be "elite" on the defensive side of the ball in a long long time.
Oh come on. Get past rankings.

We have forced 82 punts this year. One of the best in the NFL. Only like 2 other teams forced more punts. Sounds elite to me.

First midgensa We rank 12th in what matters. Stopping them from scoring. 12th is pretty good. You just picked 20 because even though it was yardage it was lower then points. But thats if you want to go rankings.

http://www.nfl.com/teams/minnesotavikings/profile?team=MIN

The only reason we rank low is because our offense is utter crap. They give their offense great field position and they're on the field all the time. We have the most opportunistic team in the NFL. 8 TDs off of turnovers. That's pretty good. One of the best in the NFL in fact. We also are one of the best for 3 & outs. We stopped our opponents to 82 punts. That includes better then teams like Jacksonville with 66, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, New England and Dallas. That tells me we get the most stops and therefore are elite. They won the Atlanta and New York games by themselves just by scoring on their own. Thats not counting the games like Chicago where if we had any other defense we would lose. Against Chicago they only let up 3 points that did not come off of turnovers. Jackson threw two picks that gave Chicago the ball inside the 20. At the 18 our defense was dominant enough to stop them and force 3 points. They got the ball at the 11 because of another pick and scored a TD. Other then that they kept him to 3. They nearly shut out San Francisco. When we were in Detroit, Tarvaris threw 4 picks and we still stopped them to 20 points (2 field goals and 2 touchdown). Thats pretty good and all but one of those scores came off of turnovers. Then that very game we got a defensive touchdown.
Are you serious? 12th is elite? C'mon man. I did not say we are crap. But elite is absolutely wrong ... not just an opinion ... but wrong. The NFL has recognized for all of its years the team with the lowest amount of yards allowed as the best defense ... and simply put ... that makes us the 20th overall defense in the league. Our defense does some things well, but not everything ... and definitely not a lot of things. Funny how you can say I pick and choose stats but not point out the fact that we give up a first down on 40 percent of third downs (good for 16th in the league), we only had 15 INTs from our "ballhawks" (good for 20th in the league), we were DEAD last against the pass, we gave up 5.1 yards per play (13th in the league), 19.1 first downs allowed per game (20th in the league) and we made 110 penalties (good for 5th in the league) ... by any standard not ELITE, but decent enough.
As for the offense you bash ... they are the number 13 offense in the league ... one away from being elite by your standards ... the 15th ranked scoring offense, 13th in turnover margin, only 14 INTs (tied for 6th best in the league), but a miserable 34 percent 3rd down number.
By any standard both our defense and offense our middle of the road (hence the 8-8 record) and both can hit home runs. But to call our defense elite ... and attribute losing DC's regularly because our defense is elite (again we have not been in the top 5 since 1994), seems to be a little off.

Why is it that we keep losing our DC?
I do not know.

Our rush D kicked ass, our pass D sucked ass.
That's a 50% grade.

If I were to get rated that I would be out of a job.
Yeah ... our defense has had this hole in the secondary for about a decade and a half now. I would like to see us do something about it.

I said it last year that Tomlin would be gone & very few people believed me. It could happen again this year it appears as well.

If it happens, the question is, how difficult is it to get into the playoffs & more importantly the big dance when your team is bringinging in a new defensive coordinator every year?

We've already had 3 different coordinators in the last 3 years, if you could call what Cottrell was doing coordinating.

What is so strange about this whole story is that there are some assistant coaches (at least one that I know of) being hired without a head coach in place. Speculation was that Sparano was in and secretly hiring his assistants but that they had to go through the interview process to make it look good and satisfy the "Rooney Rule."

very nice post... midgyy... i totally agree with you... our defense is by no means elite...
maybe elite in scoring TD's that's about the only thing...
and we give up tooooooo many third and longs... as well...although we did get better..

as for the D-coordinator.. i'm not sure why everyone wants our guys.. esp.. that last two years... maybe there's more to just the performance.. bc Frazier didn't do as good a job as Tomlin did last year.. IMO...

Lots of good coaches come out of Minnesota.. Billick, Del Rio, Tice ( i know but no one develops offensive lineman better than him), Monte Kiffin, Tomlin, Dungy to name a few..

I doubt he will get it.. Just a hunch

But if he does go there are some good replacements

Singletary, Kiffin, Bates

I would take any of these three

Imagine Kiffin here using his Tampa 2!!

I agree.. He's done a good job no matter where he has been!

I never understood why he's been tossed around like he has

He fixed Greenbays D so much.. They improved greatly when he was around

In Denver he didn't have anything to work with besides two corners and an undersized speedy DE

He would be GREAT here

It's gonna be SPORANO. Thats Parcells Guy- HE knows his coaching style oh yeah and apparently the 2 are quite buddy-buddy. So in my eyes Sporano will get that job.

Leslie Frazier says he has more on his mind than Miami job
http://www.twincities.com/vikings/ci_7947849

Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier likes to finish what he starts.

He started as a cornerback on the famed 1985 Chicago Bears Super Bowl championship team, and he served as an assistant coach on the 2006 Indianapolis Colts Super Bowl championship team.

And now, although he interviewed for a chance to fulfill a career goal, he is content in his current position.

"I was pleased about that phone call," Frazier said of the initial call from the Miami Dolphins last week to interview for their head coaching vacancy. "But at the same time, I was torn because I want us to be playing in that postseason next year..."
...besides, Frazier isn't in a rush to flee Minnesota. There also are openings with the Washington Redskins and the Atlanta Falcons. Frazier said he has not heard from either team...
