Do The Vikings Need A GM?

I have been on the GM soap box this week and have several eye opening PM's as well as a couple of replies in the threads that suprised me.

I contend that alot of issues and missunderstandings by the fan base can be directly traced to the fact that this owner doesn't have a General Manager in place to oversee not only day to day issues but long term/big picture vision stuff as well.

    Case in point.

    The 2006 Draft.
Alot of you blame the Head Coach for the snaffu regarding how/who was selected during that draft.
Even though I have broke it down several times, several of you still contend that it was the Chiller that moved up to select TJ and Cook.
Several of you also believe that TJ was the only QB that was being scouted/targeted by this team.
All of that is kindof water under the bridge, however, truth be told, most NFL organizations have a GM within thier structure and it is he and not the Head Coach that oversee that part.

    Free Agent Signings.
Alot of you also contend that it is the Chiller who is out negotiating contracts as well as brining in certain FA's during the Free Agency period, when in fact it is the Player Presonell rep, along with the scouting stuff, and the Capologist, under the tutilage/oversight of the GM and not the Head Coach who does this.

    Public Relations.
Although not discussed on here very much, I contend that alot of our issues related to the stadium effort, vision of the ownership, community participation/volunteering etc etc etc are the focus of the PR Department under the leadership of the GM and the legal department.
The recent issue with T-will along with the firing of a certain WR right before Christmas all seem to be attributed to Head Coaching decisions, when in fact they should/would be handled at the front office level by not only the PR, Legal, Budget departments, all under the oversight of the GM.

Anyway, here is the best article I could find on the web that lays out what the GM duties and responsiblities are to include the strenghts that a owner should look for when hiring this guy.

    A little side note.
Normally, the owner brings in the GM and the GM brings in the Head Coach as they have to work so close to each other.
Seems our owner forgot the GM part.

I for one want to see this fixed during the offseason.
I sure hope the Wilfs are thinking along the same lane as I.

Anyone else know of a site that has a better break down of roles/responsibilities of the GM and how he advised the owner and oversees the rest of the staff?

    Thanks my friend.
I purposely stayed away from pining on Bryzscheapski in here as I believe it isn't worth muddying the waters and believe the front office guys are purposely holding back CAP dollars last year and the year before for possible use this years off season.

Probably a better group of DE's, WR's or QB's that they might be targeting.

    One can only hope.

    Again.
    Thanks.

    Yes I agree

We have some money to spend.. Don't go for broke but pick up some quality players

Also the way we handled some of our picks lately has bothered me

We had 2 1st round and 2 2nd rounds and we decided to not trade down and pick up Leinert or Cutler or Young

There's a few things a good GM could do for us

Re: Do The Vikings Need A GM?

A straight up passing rushing DE I.E Peppers or Freeney type

And a solid number 1 WR I.E Moss or Fitzgerald someone like that

    Fire Bevel and Chilldress ASAP..

And then I would be totally happy.. Not too much to ask for is it?

Might as well toss in a QB in there if possible

    Sign a solid vet

Try for Dereck Anderson.. He can manage the game well enough and move the chains
