Fason vs. Smoot
With RB Chester Taylor sitting out because of a strained left thigh, Vikings RBs Mewelde Moore and Ciatrick Fason got plenty of work Saturday. Fason displayed one of the niftiest moves of camp, juking cornerback Fred Smoot by faking to his left and darting right. Fason gained another seven yards on the play. Smoot congratulated Fason on the move -- and then returned the favor a few plays later, drilling Fason on an outside run.
Placekicker Ryan Longwell continued what has been a sharp and professional camp, drilling all six of his field goal attempts during a full-speed kicking drill. During a similar drill Wednesday, Longwell made five of six attempts.
Red zone installation
The Vikings spent much of their afternoon practice working on red zone offense and defense. Working from the five yard line, their No. 1 offense went against the No. 2 defense for three plays. Then, the No. 2 offense worked against the No. 1 defense. The starting offense scored one touchdown in three plays, a five-yard pass from QB Brad Johnson to TE Jim Kleinsasser. The starting defense did not allow a score, getting a strong tackle in the backfield from CB Antoine Winfield to stop the final attempt.
A DIFFERENT WORLD
Scenes from a new -- and tighter -- Vikings ship:
As soon as strong safety Tank Williams fell to the ground with a knee injury, Vikings staffers went to work. In the first implementation of a new team policy, the staffers told all still and video photographers to turn their cameras away from the scene of Williams' initial treatment. The handful of photographers all appeared to comply, even though NFL rules grant them the right to full access to training camp practices -- and the fact that injuries routinely are photographed during games. The purpose of the policy presumably is to prevent opposing teams from learning details about injuries.
