Combine burned Vikings in 2005

It seems only fitting that news of the Minnesota Vikings’ desire to trade wide receiver Troy Williamson would surface in the same week that the NFL’s annual scouting combine was getting under way in Indianapolis....

Re: Combine burned Vikings in 2005
A very interesting read my friend.
Thanks.
I disagree, its an indication of a teams scouting ability if for some reason they let the combine workouts (times) dictated a players selection. It’s an indication of just how overblown the hype surrounding the combine has become.
The good teams use the stats and personal one on ones as a piece to a puzzle when drafting players.
The bad teams will buy into the hype along with the only other real audience for this kind of stuff, us football fans who love to mess about in draft mocks.
Again, one more time for possible penetration......
Teams will view the combine as a piece to the puzzle.
It gives most of the coaches time to have one on ones with the players that the scouting staff has been following all year.
It isn't the end all/be all to whether they select a guy.
Unfortunately for us, that isn't the way it happened with T-will.
As I said in another thread.
Closure is finally here on a very low point in this once storied organizations past.
I'm ready to move on.
Many many thanks to my talented friend Jos for the new Sig.

Re: Combine burned Vikings in 2005
I have mentioned on here a couple times that the Vikings were not alone in that assesment.
That summer after the draft I was playing golf with a current NFL Offensive Cordinator at the time and I was talking about how I was a little depressed that we passed on Mike Williams and took Troy Williamson.
And this guy said "Williams might be good, but I think Williamson has a chance to be a real star in this league!"
That made me feel alot better.
Just saying that the Vikes werent the only one that thought TW was "That guy".

Re: Combine burned Vikings in 2005
IMO the problem with those few drafts during that time was that Red was not going after any decent FA's and we were losing very good players and the only way to fix that available to the staff was to draft for need instead of taking the BPA at that draft slot. Many times by limiting yourself to the players at a particular position with a draft pick you stand a greater chance of failure than you do when you have the whole talent pool to pick from

Re: Combine burned Vikings in 2005
I remember being opposed to take a WR just to replace Moss.
I did want Edwards, but if he was gone, I was ready to pick another position (ssh, might have accidentally taken Williams on hype).
I really wish that Tice would have went with his Maryland ties and took Merriman.
Would coulda shoulda!
I was high on DJ, he didn't go until the 15th spot.

Man there are a lot of guys in that draft that have contributed to there teams.
Disappointments:
Pacman Jones (Personal Issues)
Mike Williams (Work Ethic)

No use trying to guess and miss out.
Might as well have a guy that can contribute if called upon.

Re: Combine burned Vikings in 2005
This is why I have SO much more faith in Childress and his staff. Tice and co. fell in love with the numbers, ignored the tape and thought they could "mold" Troy Williamson. Denny Green did the same thing with Michael Bennett. They were wrong.
Childress seems much more interested in whether or not you can play FOOTBALL, not what time you can put up on a track.
