And why is the heck do people think Carroll will leave the security of college for the NFL? Why?

Just because they coach college does not mean that the NFL is a step-up. He is about to win his 3rd in a row and is a god at USC where he does not have to deal with inflated egos and whiney rich athletes.
Missed that one.... Don't count the Longhorns out yet. They maybe don't have the media coverage that USC has been given, but they have a solid team in every position (including defense... which USC has had the luxury of not needing to htis point). I know this is the wrong thread, but I'm pretty psyched about this game. Vince Young in big games is a man among boys and they've got hard hitting, big, fast safeties and corners that may keep Reggie under 300 total yards.

At least Tice is on ground again! A few weeks ago he was in a free fall.

I could be wrong but isn't Martz actually a good coach? Only way I've heard he is bad is on here..
Then if you heard it here about "YOUR" Mn Vikings ... take it as the Gospel Truth ... Martz is a turd waiting for the stench to linger .....

Seriously, Martz is as big if not bigger headache and poss. leach on this organization as Red ever was ... if brought in.

what we need is a guy like parcells, not necesarily for his coaching ability, but just to whip these guys into shape, he'd put an end to the countless penalties, and off field embarassments

As an Iowan...I would love to see ferentz coaching our Vikings. He's done an absolutely phenomenonal job with the Hawkeyes.

If we can somehow lure Jim Bates in as our Defensive Coordinator (and Tice stays HC) our defense could be monstrous! Bates took the 29th ranked GB defense last year to 10 or 15 ranked this year WITHOUT any major personal changes. That speaks spades.

If Tice can get a competent OC this team will look very strong next year. Tice has the team believing in him. The team is responding to whatever it is he is doing. Rebuilding that chemistry with a new coach might take a while.

Martz and Billick are both very solid choices and neither would upset me. I would prefer Martz to Billick and would prefer Tice to Billick I think, but Martz is a very SOLID football guy that gets a bum wrap from people. His record is a VERY solid 53-32 (Billick is 60-48, Tice 30-31) and he has a trip to the Super Bowl. Also, most people realize he was the "brains" behind players coach Dick Vermeil and the Rams Super Bowl win. I am not saying that Vermeil was not a big deal, but Martz is a football nut ... sometimes a little arrogant, but a very solid NFL coach that I think would help C-Pep and fit well in Minnesota.

I would rather keep Tice then sign either Billick or Martz. Martz is not a coach that will try running the ball and he has health concerns as for Billick I think they will keep him for one more year before they fire him.

Re: Clayton: Tice on Shaky Ground

 Now let me get this straight.

There are people who want Tice gone no matter what.

There are others who want him gone if he doesn't take the Vikings into the playoffs.

They're both looking for a winning coach, yet they want to replace Tice whose team is 7-5 & replace him with either Brian Billick whose team is 4-8 or Mike Martz whose team is 5-7 & they'll be happy as clams.

A winning coach for a losing coach & they'll be happy?

I fail to see the logic in it.

Let's see either one of them overcome the adversity Tice has.

Much of this will ultimately depend on Wilf's vision for the team and the available candidates. Tice will not be fired; however, Tice's contract situation may make any attempt at replacing him easier. He's in his final year of his contract, so if Wilf decided that there was a better coach available or one with more "upside", depending on Ziggy's feelings about Tice, we would not see our coach getting fired. His contract would merely fail to be renewed, and Tice would fade away. I have heard neither ringing endorsements nor condemnations from Ziggy on Tice's coaching, merely the "I have no intentions of firing Tice this season" comment, which is really a non-statement when you consider that there will be no currently-existing contract come February.
