Chris Kluwe gets hang of big punts again

    New special-teams boss urges change

MANKATO, Minn. — A couple of months ago, new Vikings special-teams coordinator Brian Murphy had a simple question for punter Chris Kluwe:

How could the Vikings rekindle Kluwe's penchant as a rookie for launching punts that seemingly threatened to touch the roof of the Metrodome?

Hang time and having players stay in their lanes is important on deep kicks.

On short kicks, why even punt the ball within the field of play?
Drop the ball three yards out of bounds, and then there is no worry that Reggie Bush or Devin Hester will return the punt for a touchdown.

I just hope Murphy has a clue and can get the ST's in shape.
I would like them to deliver decent field position, for both offense and defense.

    Did you read the article?

C Mac will love this one.

When coach Brad Childress took over the team in 2006, his special-teams coordinator, Paul Ferraro, worked with Kluwe on directional punting. That was a departure from what Kluwe excelled in at UCLA and during his rookie year with the Vikings.

Re: Chris Kluwe gets hang of big punts again

For the record, IDK if huge punts are necessarily the best thing.
Big punts can mean out kicking the coverage.
Give a returner a running start, and it is easy to overshoot your coverage lane.
Kluwe lost a lot of what he was known for when they started asking him to to directional punts, but I understand WHY they asked him to do it.

Big punts are fun to watch, but not much fun to cover.
