Thread: Childress obfuscates over strange punt return

One thing is certain: Something went awry on a second-quarter punt return last Sunday at the Metrodome. The breakdown was so thorough, in fact, that Vikings coach Brad Childress declined to discuss it this week -- probably because he plans to re-deploy what appeared to be a trick play later this season.

It all began with 7 minutes, 20 seconds remaining in the first half in the Vikings' 29-22 victory over Oakland. Punt returner Mewelde Moore set up at the Vikings 18-yard line to await Shane Lechler's punt. In an unusual arrangement, safety Tank Williams stood to Moore's left at the 30-yard line, and safety Mike Doss was flanked to the right.

Moore retreated to the 16 to field Lechler's 54-yard punt. But as both Williams and Doss watched, Raiders cover man Jerrod Cooper -- who had run past the Vikings' Charles Gordon at the line of scrimmage -- drilled Moore the instant he caught the ball.

Neither Williams nor Doss attempted to block Cooper, suggesting they were in position for some sort of unique return...

Or maybe the plan was to see how durable MM is?

i told my dad as soon as he got hit w/o waiving that i thought they were trying to set up a lateral or pich or something..

i'm liking the gadget plays a lot!

p.s... greenway lead the league in fumble recoveries.. AWESOME!!

yeah i would have liked to seen what they where going to do... but i loved the idea

Gadget plays can always be counted on for the W.
Especially when you're playing football in your backyard against your chain-smoking brother-in-law and your Grandpa that just returned from quadruple bypass surgery.

Everybody likes those gadget plays when they work, and they surprise the other team if deployed at the right time. We need to use them to get our anemic offense started, but we have to be careful not to go to the trick play well too often. I'm looking for a flea flicker this week in the Meadowlands. Eight in the box... CT gets the handoff right up the middle.... the defense collapses, but wait Chester just lateraled the ball back to Tarvaris.... and Troy is way behind the defense for a easy toss and catch......

I for one like to see a gadget play or two used in the game.
Not only are they effective, in most instances, but the willingness of a team to open things up like this causes the opposing D-coord fits, especially when they work.

Funny thing is, the Vikes have had some sort of trick play in almost every game this year.
Very intersting thing this week is that they showed they will use multiple gadgets in a game.

Again, D-coord for the Giants must be up late nights this week.

Maybe not as much as we hope but they are getting there.
Another game were we score over 20 and an increase (even slightly) in passing and we might just get above 12th or 13th this weekend.
Especially when you look at the teams that are ahead of us and what matchups they have.
