Childress to make camp evaluations

Childress to make camp evaluations

The practice whistle will make an early return to Winter Park this weekend when coach Brad Childress holds the first of his two mandatory minicamps.
Under former coaches Mike Tice and Dennis Green, the Vikings typically held all offseason camps after the draft. New coaches are allowed two minicamps, however, and Childress has his first scheduled in the middle of the offseason strength and conditioning program.

The practices will only include veterans and are scheduled to take place indoors, but Childress said he wants to get a better feel for the roster before finalizing draft plans and targeting secondary players in free agency.

"You will get a chance to assess each position as you line up across the board," Childress said. "A picture paints 1,000 words. You can look at the names on a depth chart. You can look at videotape. But when you get out there and get five practices with them, that gives you a great opportunity as a staff to find out what in fact you do have.

"It's not in pads, but you get a chance to see movement skills. If you trust your eyes, you see what you have, whether a guy is old or a guy is young, whether he has potential, whether he is heavy, all those kinds of things."

Childress will conduct two practices Friday, two on Saturday and one Sunday.

The minicamp could be the only opportunity for holdover veterans to earn a trip to training camp. Childress has not cut any players under contract, but some roster movement could occur after this weekend.

The Vikings' second minicamp will be held May 12-14.

It was personal

During a news conference Tuesday to introduce receiver Nate Burleson, Seattle president of football operations Tim Ruskell acknowledged the revenge factor in his "poison pill" battle with the Vikings. Ruskell said the Seahawks would not have included the now-infamous clause had Burleson come from any team other than the Vikings.

"It was an offshoot of the Hutchinson deal," said Ruskell, referring to the Vikings' offer sheet for guard Steve Hutchinson, which Seattle would have had to fully guarantee in order to match.

"It's not something we were happy about. It was part of this deal. It really was between Minnesota and ourselves. It's not something that we would throw out to anybody else in the league. It's unfortunate. The league will take care of it now. It'll be something that won't be part of the league as we go forward."

Etc.

• The Atlanta Falcons appear adamant about seeking a No. 1 draft choice in any trade for backup quarterback Matt Schaub. The Vikings and Falcons discussed Schaub's availability Monday, but no offer was made. Discussions could resume closer to the April 29-30 draft.

Should give us a clearer picture after camp if he starts cutting people. Course he may hold on to them till after the draft to make sure he gets a body to fill the spot.

Childress to make camp evaluations
Nice insight Kevin. I have a hunch that the other 31 HCs in the league will also be making camp evaluations.

Camp Evaluations are good.. A 1st rd pick for Matt Schaub is fair enough, and that statement from the Seagull's gutless owner just proves that they are the biggest whiners when it comes to negotiations.. It is nobody's fault but there own that they are stupid. Now if they would have put the franchise tag on Hutch, chances are he would still be a Seagull. They didn't, and now he is a Viking. It takes a pretty gutless piece of crap to make a statement like that while introducing a new player to the media. Now I know where Holmgren gets it from, we will be hearing how they got screwed out of the SB, and how the got screwed out of Hutchinson for many years to come.. Grow up you F'N babies, and concentrate on the task at hand..

I think that caoch Childress is showing his intelligence by holding a mini-camp prior to the draft. This allows him to see where the team sits with his and his staff's own eyes. Everyone in the world can tell you about a player, but if you don't do your own research then why should you be in charge? Childress has his head in the right place, and to me that is very exciting. I also think that this type of smart and logical thinking will have a good effect on the players. It is a nice change to go from "I'll-be-your-buddy-Tice" to a coach who will tell you how it is, do what he can to change things for the better, and when everything is said and done, will get the most out of what he has.

Seahawks are pussies, I mean how tough can they be with a computer designer/programmer for an owner and a cry baby for a coach. And as was said in a different thread, if another team had used the poison-pill tactic it would be marveled and admired.

I wonder if they'll move Tank Williams to WLB.
