The Childress Era: Play Calling (2006-2008)

I could not sleep last night, so, I decided to take on the ominous task of entering every offensive play, by down, that has ever been called since Childress took over as HC.
I used the “play by play” information on nfl.com.
There is really no way to determine what the actual play calling was, but, this data is the best available for looking into it.
    What does this prove?
The only thing I can think of is that it proves that I am, in fact, an idiot.

What we see played out on the field is not necessarily the play that was called.
    What?
The reason I say that is because there are obviously many options available in a pass play and we just see the end result, like an incompletion across the middle.
Regarding running plays what we see played out on the field is more closely related to the play that was called, with the obvious exception of a QB scrambling for his life.

Anyway, here is a summary of all the offensive plays during the regular season from 2006-2008 (game 4).
I have some statistical analyses and some figures, but I am not sure how to post the graphics and I don’t really feel like doing it anyway.
If any of you asshats want to play around with the data, just pm me your email address and I’ll be happy to send you the spreadsheet.

*this information was collected from the play-by-play information on nfl.com.
I went through every game and recorded every play, by down, in a spreadsheet.
The numbers being shown to you are all expressed in a percentage of the total number of plays.
There are three breakdowns for each year and a summary.
    The general pattern is:
    1. Overall summary of all plays that season by down (% of total by down),
    2.
Summary of the passing plays only by down (% of only passing plays for that year), and 3.
Summary of the rushing plays only by down (% of only rushing plays for that year).
The fourth down data was only included if it was a run or a pass.
    The data includes the 2006, 2007, 2008 (through game 4), and a combined data set (2006-2008-game 4).
At the beginning of each year there is information about the sample size.

The numbers following each line will represent 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th down, respectively.
For example, if the line reads:

    Short left: 11.7, 12.1, 17.6, 10.
That means that 11.7% of the time in the period being referred to there was a short left pass during first down, 12.1% of the time a short left pass was called on second down, 17.6% of the time a short left pass was called on third down, and 10% of the time a short left pass was called on fourth down.
For example, if you add all the percentages up across any down within any subsection of the data (e.g., first downs in 2006 overall summary) it will add up to 100%, excluding rounding error.

I just entered all of that data into my lotus 1-2-3 and then took the results and asked my magic 8 ball what it all meant.

It told me to fire childress.

    Damn it!
I forgot about the magic 8 ball.....that would have saved me a lot of time.

    Impressive work.
My eyes hurt but still impressive.

Brad Childress is 1-6 in games played Dec. 17 or later.

You can't sleep and I can't stay awake after that one.

After my head exploded I realized the play calling in general is not much changed from last year. The numbers seem to confirm what our eyes are seeing for the most part.

    More ammo for uffdaMac !
What takes a quarterback to the next level is not arm strength or mobility or any of that stuff. Its the ability to play on critical downs. Manage third downs, or red zones or four-minute or two-minute situations"

Re: The Childress Era: Play Calling (2006-2008)

So...64.7% of all third downs we throw short...?

We throw deep on 9% of third downs, and we run 26.3%

Now one has to wonder, how many of those third downs were short and how many were long.
Seems we throw too often on third and short, while throwing short WAY TOOOOO OFTEN on third and long.
Obviously, some of that is playcalling, but much is our WRs being covered and the QB not having much but an underneath out route open...

    D'oh!!

Gee, thanks for doing all that work prophet. Now all the coaches that play us know how "dependable" we are to do certain thing in certain situations and make it even tough on us. LOL
