With the Vikings concluding mini-camps this week at Winter Park, Pro Bowl center Matt Birk said practices have been different under new coach Brad Childress.

"They're a lot more business like," he said. "There's no down time. You get five minutes to put your shoes and stuff on."

) Childress says he's confident backup quarterback Mike McMahon, although he has been shaky in the past, can adequately fill in if starter Brad Johnson is injured.

) The Vikings report a record $400,000 was raised for their Children's Fund resulting from their first two events of the year, the Arctic Blast and a celebrity golf tournament. This week, Childress was added to the charity's seven-member board of directors.

) Ex-Vikings coach Mike Tice of the Jacksonville Jaguars returns home to Edina today, then heads to another home in Seattle for three weeks.

I'd rather they be like that so the players will be ready for the season, versus the way Tice had them..
