Re: Chances running out for Udeze

No doubt there will be new assignments and new looks.

It could help a lot of people. I am looking forward to better LB play. I am hoping Frazier will tighten up that zone and put our guys in a better position to succeed in LB coverage.

That's what I was talking about in an earlier thread When I said I would rather see him with 0 QB sacks & a lot of stops for little or no gain rather than a few QB sacks & give up yardage on the field . Yet I was laughed at by some who claimed Udeze was barely mediocre at tackling & QB sacks were the the all important stats that mattered to them.

It doesn't matter to me if a player sacks a QB for a loss of yards or a running back, full back or receiver for a loss of yards. A loss of yards is a loss of yards & Udeze led the team with 13 of them & from playing out of his normal position on the opposite side of the line.
I don't think I realized he led the team in tackles for a loss.
    That does say a lot.

The whole reason that Leslie Frazier was hired was to keep the Tampa2/Dungy2/Indy2 system in place - and NOT to institute new schemes.

Udeze gets a slight Mulligan for playing out-of-position.
But a DE starting 16 games and not getting even half-a-sack by falling on the QB is really really really stinky.

I'm more excited about season 2 of the Ray Edwards era, to be honest.

How about this word - Wrinkle - vice Scheme.

Sure he was hired to provide consistancy but he was also hired to fix the pass defense.
That my friend will result in new "Wrinkles" being added to the overall scheme.
    ;D
Many many thanks to my talented friend Jos for the new Sig.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/josdin00/Vikings/Marrdro_sig.jpg

I have to disagree there was no doubt that Udeze was very strong against the run but when opposing quarterbacks can take a nap wake up take a sh*t and then finish his coffee before having to throw a pass is a major concern!

That is our most glaring need on defense and I am hoping that Kenechi, Edwards, James or Mitchell can step up and be the 12 to 16 sack person we need and to make QB's a little nervous knowing that person is coming after him like a Julius Peppers.
What we've got here is failure to communicate.

However he is a really good lineman, one that I am proud to have on my team.
His sack total is not good way to measure what he does.

You just described paradise to me.

No doubt our pass rush was lacking last year, as it has for many years.
Udeze has his place on the team, but as a pure QB assasin, I don't think he has the athleticness to pull it off.
He should still be able to manage 5-8 sacks by the nature of his position, providing everybody else is doing their job, which they didn't do last year.

There were a number of plays last year where fat Pat was the guy putting the most pressure on the QB, that has to change.

    Had not realized that either.
Very solid point Singer, It is not only sacks that matter to the competence of a DE.

But, the most important issue this offseason is the pass rush and oppossing quarterbacks time in the pocket.

Re: Chances running out for Udeze

Generally speaking lineman are graded on many things and sacks is probably the least important.

You have cap assignment, contain assignment, flat coverage, penetration (dont do it cajun), 3 yards is usually the goal, pressure (pocket disruption), knock downs.....sacks.

Really all we can do is go with the coaches. They have all the info. Us looking at sacks alone and claiming him dead in the water is not true nor is it fair. I remember seeing him getting in the QB's face plenty. Containing well....I am sure some of you saw him getting stood up and doing nothing......we dont have all the answers.

I belive from watching him he will be starting and he is a very talented athlete who as long as he stays healthy will continue to improve.
