Carroll mentioned as possible replacement for Tice ...

    POSTED 8:30 a.m. EDT, October 22, 2005

CARROLL THINKING ABOUT A MOVE BACK TO THE NFL?

We know, we know. It's becoming annual grist for the rumor mill.

Will Pete Carroll stay in the NCAA, where he is a stud, or will he go back to the NFL, where he had been a dud?

Actually, he wasn't technically a dud, but the perception is that Carroll underperformed as a head coach in the pro game. In four seasons with the Jets and Pats, however, his record was 34-33.

We're told that Carroll is floating the notion with his confidants that he'd be interested in listening to offers from NFL teams this year, especially if USC wins another National Championship.

Carroll, we hear, is monitoring the situations in Minnesota (where he served as defensive backs coach for five years), Green Bay, and New Orleans/San Antonio/Baton Rouge.

Carroll was abruptly fired by an impatient Leon Hess after only one year with the Jets in favor of (gulp) Rich Kotite. The decision to let Carroll go in New England worked out a little bit better, given that the Pats hired Bill Belichick to take over.

Carroll was pursued last year by the San Francisco 49ers, who undoubtedly would have drafted USC quarterback Matt Leinart if he had come out early. If Carroll lands with the team that ends up with the top pick in the draft, Carroll would be able to resume his NFL head-coaching career with Leinart under a six-year contract.

And although the notion of the Vikings dumping quarterback Daunte Culpepper a year ago would have been beyond unthinkable, if the team continues to lose and lands the first overall pick in the draft it'll be hard for the Vikes not to think long and hard about taking Leinart and cutting the cord on Culpepper, especially if Carroll ends up being the head coach.

I've always been a Tice backer, but as the old saying goes, nice guys finish last....

I really have my doubts about Tice these days, I'de think giving Carroll a look would be for a worthy cause..

But I don't agree with the letting of Pep go idea.....JMHO

as a notre dame fan and watching the great classic last week..i have to agree that carrol would be a good (assistant) for Tice maye as a Def Coord....i have problem with our current def. coordinator...he is not utilizing the talents our linebacker copp has and someone like carroll i think would be a great def. coordintor than our latest def coordinator dud.

I've herd Bud isnt coming back for sure, same with Ditka, and Jimmy Johnson. But if we brought in Carrol, and a new DC, OC we'd be set.
