Are you forgetting a little thing called the salary cap, he also decided to keep AP, Antoine Winfield, Jared Allen, Chad Greenway and they had already release Steve Hutchinson and Cedric Griffin....some of the fallout from the CBA and cap rollback, remember most of the free agents signed were one year deals....with the exception of Carlson's 5 year 25 mill contract ooops but that would be almost one season for a QB like Manning

Only 9 teams are giving up less than 20 points per game. The bottom three NYG at 34.8, Jax at 33, and Vikings at 31.6. Panthers are only giving up 13.6 so they are an excellent defense- too good for our mediocre coaching staff and vanilla offense to overcome. But if we don't get this defense fixed and soon, it won't matter how well Freeman plays. We are simply not built to outscore teams. Don't see the Vikings putting up over 30 points every Sunday. Not sure what Winfield would have cost us, but his experience is badly needed. The LB corps is substandard and we don't even have to talk about how bad the defensive backfield is. There is some potential up front though.

Teams successfully running a WCO and/or 3-4 defense are more flexible and using some imagination. Obviously, you can run a WCO that throws passes further than 5 yards, we just don't. The 3-4 defense is really just a way to switch up who the 4th (or 5th) rusher is on any given play and keep the Offense guessing as to where they need to slide their protection.

Same thing with the zone defense, it can still work at times, and/or with slight modifications. Maybe, you play your top 2 CBs in a man cover vs. teams with 2 really good WRs, but you build a zone around them to pick up the rest.

Our schemes are out dated and we've seen very little if any willingness to try to adapt to what works in today's game.

Of course, lacking a legit QB doesn't help things on either side of the ball...when you have more 3 and outs than first downs in a game, your defense is on the field all game long and with enough chances, any D will get beat eventually. We are 2nd worst in the league in time of possession, averaging about 26 minutes, that means the opposition has the ball an extra 8 minutes per game and all those extra opportunities take a toll on your D.
Control the line, control the time, and give your D a chance to shine!!

Manning was NOT going to play for a NFC team!! There was ZERO chance of him playing for the Vikings, and remember: the 49ers wanted him as well, and it wasn't taken seriously by the star QB. He was just not willing to play his brother that often.

The threat of him knocking Eli out in the playoffs every year was just too real. Did you see him after the Broncos/Giants game? He HATES playing Eli!!

Money talks. I agree the chances of him going to the NFC were very slim, but if a contending team would have been willing to pay him a kings ransom of garuanteed money, I think he would've taken it. Given his injury concerns at the time, no team was willing to do that. Hard to blame anyone at the time, but right now the Bronco's look like geniuses.

    Carolina vs. Minnesota post-game

We are the only team in the league that could have 3 first round picks and fail to make any of them a star. Pathetic.

Patterson could easily be a star, Musgrave just can't figure out how to use him. He's pathetic.

More from the mind of CMac. Some day, you really need to let the rest of us use that "Inside Winter Park" cam you have which reveals these secrets to you.

The knock on Patterson out of college was that he didn't work hard and was a lousy route runner. That couldn't have anything at all to do with him not getting on the field, could it?

Face it - Bill Musgrave has forgotten more about football than you will ever know.

Thanks to Josdin for the awesome sig!

I don't disagree that Musgrave knows more about football than most others on this forum...

But the knock on Patterson wasn't his work ethic. His biggest knock was that he was so raw, having only 1 year against FBS level competition. He wasn't a lousy route runner, he just hadn't developed his route running skills yet - again, raw.

Up to this point in his career, Patterson has dominated by relying solely on his athletic ability and instincts so often that he hasnít taken the time to master the craft of running precise routes and setting up defensive backs consistently.
