    That busted my gut.
Never looked at him the same.
But back then I had the Purple People Eaters so high up on that pedestal.
    I was crushed.
Now that I think about it, Eller was the first athelete I remember connected with drugs.
The media really hushed that stuff up back then.
I know later on it was revealed that the Cowboys had HUGE Coke parties with hookers and all the trimmings in the 70's. NO COMMENT CAJUN!

    trimmings..............that's pretty funny..........

In the late 70's early 80's he used to speak
at the local high schools about his addiction
and the dangers. I was fortunate enough to hear
    him twice. Excellent speaker.

    destroy

    BOB SANSEVERE

How can he mess up like this? Doesn't he realize what he's throwing away? Why would he risk his NFL career over drugs? What is he, a moron?

People are asking questions like that about Vikings running back Onterrio Smith, who is facing a one-year suspension for violating the NFL's drug policy.

The league gives a player three strikes and, barring a successful appeal, this is strike three for Smith.

After the first strike, you would think he would have wised up. And if not after the first strike, then certainly after the second.

    It doesn't work that way.

"Most people really do not understand the power and presence of drugs,' former Viking Carl Eller said. "I know here's Onterrio as an NFL player, and people look at that being really unique and they ask, 'How can he screw up his NFL career?' Drugs can come into the life of anyone and disrupt anyone's life and cause pain.'

    Eller knows.

Toward the end of his Hall of Fame career, Eller used cocaine, he said. He saw what drugs can do, the damage they can cause. He shoved drugs aside before he got in too deep. The experience made him want to help others. In the early 1980s, Eller helped set up the NFL's first drug program.

"I kind of know what that means, what's happened to Onterrio,' Eller said. "It's a pretty tough deal for him. It's not the end of the world, but it's a tough challenge for him.'

It can be a tough challenge for anyone doing drugs.
