BUD GRANT AND THE WEST COAST

I think Bud Grant was coaching before there were any states on the West Coast.

BUD GRANT AND THE WEST COAST

Bud Grant was an innovator there was no west coast offense back then. He did however introduce the 3 wide reciever offense and was the first to run the 2 minute drill with 8 minutes left against San Diego and Dan Fouts ( the Vikings did come back and win that game).
    can we clone Bud Grant?

Absolutely - it's true. Do a google search, "Jerry Burns West Coast Offense". Here's a quote from Viking Update, and just one of the the links.

"Burns had been with the Vikings through the Super Bowl years, starting in 1968 when Grant hired him. Burns invented the single-back style offense (to take advantage of Chuck Foreman's abilities), better known these days as the "West Coast Offense." Make no mistake, it was not Bill Walsh and the S.F. 49ers who invented it and used it so well in the 80's, it was Burns in the 70's that originated it and made it famous."

Some more along those lines from a site called 49erhaters.com...by the way superiorbartime, if you wanted an example of another website that advertises hatred for a particular team, I think this one qualifies!

The very name "West Coast Offense" is flat-out wrong, because its roots are entrenched firmly in the midwest. Former Minnesota Vikings coach Bud Grant pointed out that Walsh "learned most of what he knew from Paul Brown. And he never gave Paul Brown any credit. Paul Brown was the greatest innovator in the coaching field that ever came along. But Walsh invented the game." (In case you didn't get it, that last sentence was bitter sarcasm.)

"You talk about the West Coast Offense," Grant said, "When we had Tarkenton here, that's exactly what we were doing -- short passing, dumping the ball to Foreman in the flat. Jerry Burns was doing that before Bill Walsh ever got in the business of doing it. Bill Walsh knew the value of having a PR department to put out his stuff. So your question is, does that bother me? No, it doesn't. It would bother me if it represented dollars or something. But it doesn't -- it represents ego. I could live with more dollars, but I can't live with more ego."

BUD GRANT AND THE WEST COAST

Chuck Foreman had Ed Marinaro as a blocking back for several years because Fran Tarkington wanted a reciever out of the backfield. Also the article states the Vikings won an NFL championship! When we all know the Vikings were the first team to lose four Super Bowls. Also Bud Grant retired and did recommend Jerry Burns as head coach so Bud Grant did not have a west coast offense Burns did.

BUD GRANT AND THE WEST COAST

Well, fyi, dan3ski, the definition of West Coast is short pass/run plays used to control the clock, and ball. Tarkington and Grant used exactly this,(i did some research), and tore everyone up, even though they have no rings to prove it, its enuff in my case.

    dan3ski....

Keep in mind that in 1969, pro football was split up into the NFL (National Football League) and the AFL (American Football League). So in 1969, the Minnesota Vikings were indeed NFL champions!

The following year (1970), the two leagues merged and became the NFC and AFC that we know today. As part of that merger, the Baltimore Colts and Pittsburgh Steelers moved from the NFL into the AFC.

Secondly, Jerry Burns was Bud Grant's offensive coordinator. In effect, the Vikings ran the "West Coast" style of offense when Grant was head coach. It doesn't matter who you say "invented" it (heck, maybe Grant was giving credit to Paul Brown), the fact is that the Vikings were running it long before the 49ers ever did.

Third, if you are going to talk about all time Viking and NFL greats (and Hall of Famers), please spell their names correctly. It's TARKENTON. There's no -ing to it.
