I realize that $380,000 is a lot of money, and that as an former undrafted rookie free agent, he has to be thrilled that he's made his way into a solid role as a starter in the NFL. However, I also realize that he contributed in a major way to our defensive efforts in the secondary, and put up some impressive numbers (9 INT, 10 PD, 95 tackles). We responded by offering him a minimum contract, simply because he had pretty much no other option. I don't want the Vikings to get the reputation as a team that screws their own players. We want to attract the quality free agents year after year, not give them a reason to look elsewhere.
I think Brian Russell needs to have at least one more good season before we blow alot of money on a one season wonder. I hope he does, but try to keep in perspective that 380,000 dollars is alot of money and he is most likely still in the top 1% of income in the US.
