Excellent post and a great point.

A incident like 98 sure will/would take the wind out of alot of sails.

Most will forget that this year is just the beginning of alot of chances to win the big one.
Except then we'll be back to "A QB away from a SB".

Sure he could. That isn't me piling on Brad it is just that Sean Payton is pretty damn good and so is Greg Williams.

Despite our record the play calling has still been a little feast or famine at times.

Oh c'mon ... really? What makes Sean Payton any better than Brad Childress?

Payton has shit away the last two seasons despite having better talent than the rest of his division. He is reckless and cares ONLY about the offensive side of the ball.

While Chilly is more offensive minded at least he has had DCs in here to do good work.

Payton was on the hot seat until Gregg Williams got in town and saved his tail.

That is just simply the nature of the beast. At least 31 teams every single season are 1-53 players away from a Super Bowl.

Re:Brad Childress is going to cost us the Super Bo

let me begin by stating this article is terrible. I will like to point out some things about this article that makes little to no sense.

Like I tell everyone, Childress was a first time head coach and no matter what he did in his previous position, it takes sometimes to come into proficiency in a new role. Imagine if you were a small town lawyer and got hired to become a major lawyer in a major city. It will take some time for you to get comfortable and become an elite lawyer on you new stage. The nuances of the big city must be learned. Your would have to learn the major players in the city. Who you can depend on, and who you cannot. Sometimes we forget these people are humans. With all that said, Childress has made major leaps in his coaching ability. He is a damn good head coach and I believed he turned the corner about week 15 last season. We are seeing better challenges, smarter decisions and better management of players and the clock.

At the end of the day.....EVEN IF CHILDRESS IS THE REASON WE LOSE THE SUPERBOWL....HE IS THE COACH THAT GOT US THERE!

Except for the Lions. They're going to need more than 53 players.

These two things in my head that are called eyes.

I would take the pairing of Payton/Williams over Childress/Frazier.

I really don't give a rats behind about what either coach has done in years past since this thread is about THIS SEASON.

Let me rephrase that... "A QB away from being SB contenders"

Wasn't Favre going to cost us the NFC Championship or fail to deliver it, something like that....how does Chiller cost the Vikes the SB if they can't get past the previous game, writer needs to do more research before predicting the Vikes season end. :P

Re:Brad Childress is going to cost us the Super Bowl.

Well I think you can make arguments on either side that can carry water. You can argue that it's Childress's system finally coming together or on the other side it's just the Brett Favre effect of what this team would be with a hall of fame QB. Coaching is just one side of the question anyways. A SB winner is a combination of lucky/skilled moves by the front office, coaches preparing the players in practice and preparing a game plan, and players on a year to year basis of executing what is asked of them.

With that 3 sided beast to win the super bowl I also believe that one side can be at such a high level as to make up for any deficiencies in the other. Love him or hate him Bill Bellicheck has run out a SB caliber team for many many years. Some of that can be attributed to Tom Brady but every year it seems the media says the Patriots are getting too old and are going to fall down, they don't. Which leads us back to the Vikings.

There has been a great stock piling of talent that has happened by the front office over the years and one heck of a defense at times. This has been followed by a team improving year to year. How much that has to do with Personnel compared to coaching is hard to tell. All I know is Brett Favre has stepped in at QB and made this team look like a Super Bowl worthy contender. Did the players just happen to get the system down or did it just take a Hall of Famer to execute it? Or to look at it further is it Brett Favre making the system work or would this unit of guys on offense do just as well with any other Coach calling the shots week to week?

Childress will define himself this year one way or another. I think the Vikings will be in the NFC championship game against the Saints. That is the kind of matchup legends are born out of. I think if Childress can come out and show that his players are ready and finding holes in the other team he will have cemented his spot in Vikings history. On the other hand if the Vikes come out and fail to move the ball and have plays like 3rd and 10 draw runs I think Childress will be left holding the bag.

So to answer the question, yes I think Childress could cost us the Super Bowl. Just look at what happened what Denny Green decided to play not to lose. I have been a critic of Childress since he was hired, and I am still unconvinced as to he being the reason the Vikings are doing so well. But I think he can maybe change my mind a little bit by the end of the Super Bowl.
