To Blitz Or Not To Blitz
I have a feeling I'm not the only one screaming for the Vikings to use more blitzes. I don't know why, but I just love a nice blitz.
It's aggressive, like the defense is screaming "screw this, we are getting after you and we're doing it now!". It's a statement. It put fear in the quarterback's eyes and the offensive linemen goes from double-teaming a guy the previous play, to having his hands full just knowing whom to block.
It's the defense attacking.
However, not blitzing at all might not be such a bad idea. Certainly seemed to work last game against the Cardinals. That's right! The Vikings blitzed NO times. Zero! According to ESPN, that only happens once a year. And the Vikings still recorded a very impressive seven sacks for the night. Jared Allen (2 sacks) and Brian Robison (3 sacks!) wrecked havoc at their respective ends.
My thought is that the Vikings' coaches knew the Cardinals have a very bad offensive line, plus they also knew that the Vikings have arguably the best defensive line in the NFL. They felt comfortable enough to leave five men rushing the QB and the put the rest of the defense to cover the field the whole time. It worked! Apart from the Redskins game, (which was a very unordinary offense to defend) the Vikings D has been one of the best in the biz. The D-line is still as good as before, the linebackers are solid, and the secondary has improved by miles. Statistically, we are close to a top 5 defense right now.
It is quite simple really.
You blitz to put pressure on the opposing QB ... if your front four is doing that regularly without blitzing ... then no reason to blitz.
I like to think blitzes are out there to try and force mistakes, but with out guys getting 7 sacks without blitzing and getting a pick-six in the process I feel like we played it right here.
Some teams will require the blitz to overwhelm their blockers and get in the face of faster decision making QBs. But with the Cards I had no problem with the plan.
Anytime we blitz I feel my heart sink and I'm glad if the play ends without us being burned. Antoine is one of my favorite Vikings ever, but putting him on an island, especially against a no. 1 wr just doesn't suit him.
Cook is coming along, and he has the size to match up with guys like Jennings and Megatron but he just isn't far along enough to do it solo.
I like that we're sticking to our guns with two deep, most of the time.

I just love seeing our defense play fast and physical. I like what I am seeing......
I love what our front 4 are doing.. even without the star "WarPig" we have youth and Vet power pushing pockets and forcing qb's to do things they don't want. our backend D is playing far better then the past few years but again are mostly on the very young side. are we missing a couple pieces? yes.. are they on the roster and just need to develop? maybe, and the more we are seeing of them that maybe is turning into a yes we got some good guys coming.
as far as the blitz. i have noticed a few games we have sent one extra.. or alligned guys differently. this really seems to be working. ok vs the cards.. we didn't need more.. but there will be times when we do. and keeping 5-6 guys back. all in all.. our DC really seems to have the guys locked in. and the rebuilding D has become a D that is making OC's nervous.
