A bit of perspective

OK, here we are.
Week 8 approaching and we are sitting in last place in the NFC North with a 2-4 record.
Oh the horror.
Oh the humanity.
Our season is over.
We will never get the new stadium.
The team is moving...

Right.

Before we start selling all of our purple, I think some of us (myself included) need a little history lesson.
Let's play a game called "Where were we in week 8?"

Year	Record going into wk 8	Final record
2006	4-2	6-10
2005	2-4	9-7
2004	5-1	8-8
2003	6-0	9-7
2002	1-5	6-10

The fact is the first six games are not a very good indicator as to how the rest of the season will play out.
Three times in the past five years we have started out strong just to falter in the last ten games.
Once we started out badly and went on a 7-3 winning streak, just barely missing the playoffs.
Only once, in 2002, did we finish the season the same way we started it.
So it is silly to start planning out playoff dates if we are 4-2, and it is just as silly to start anticipating draft picks when we are 2-4.

This is not limited to the Vikings either.
The Cowboys were 3-3 at this time last year, and made the playoffs.
The panthers were 4-2 and missed them.
It happens every year.
Some teams will start out hot and falter, and some teams will start off cold and rally.

I am not trying to say that I expect us to rip off a winning streak.
But I am saying that it isn't over yet.
And we are so very close to being a very good team.
There is a lot of football left to be played this year, so don't give up the faith quite yet.

I know that in the past we have come out blazin' only to fizzle down the stretch (or after a loss to the Giants).

Maybe this is our "bizarro" year and we come our stale and end up golden...or at least things looking good for the future.

That is exactly what is so frustrating for many of us. We know this and know this team is better than it's record would indicate. Somehow find an effective passing game and this team can compete with almost anyone. Many of the pieces in place already are very good. That's why we see 40 plus pages of frustration posted in one post game thread.

Yep...always better to think positive and have the glass half full. Even if the season doesn't turn around there have been a lot of positives we can build on. I think our defense will be even better next season, and realistically any improvment in the QB position and Oline gives us at least a shot at the division next season...maybe more. I know others would like a Head Coaching change...or adding a top WR or TE....but whatever happens I can't help but think we will be better....stronger and more able to compete by next season.

I am not sure I am positive enough to think we will make it to playoffs this season though. I am positive but also a realist. We just don't have quite enough Oarsman for the Vikings Ship this season to get there.

It is frustrating for me sometimes to think about the "Almost Won" aspect of some of games this season. It truly has been a game of inches....touch.....execution.....etc. I think about Detroit game and the Dallas game....both of which were very winnable, and again I feel some positives instead of hanging the head low.

We have a lot of football left to be played and I for one hope to keep seeing the team move in positive directions....win or lose.

It's good to see that some around here see some positive's. There is still time to win a few games and get this thing turned around some. We aren't gonna push into the playoffs this year, but our young nucleus should start to emerge. We are only a couple plays from being a 3-3, or 4-2 team. If we can get on a little roll and execute just a little better we still might be a .500 club. Good post ND.

Just because something is possible, does not mean it is probable.
WE could win the next 10 games, but can anyone see that happening?

There is still a lot of football to be played, but that fact is about the only thing giving fans hope right now.
