Birk jumping on effort to help retired player

BIRK JUMPING ON EFFORT TO HELP RETIRED PLAYERS
Vikings center Matt Birk apparently will announce plans on Tuesday to donate a portion of his December 23 game check to Gridiron Greats, a fund that provides financial assistance to retired NFL players.
Birk and others will appear at a press conference on Tuesday at Birk's restaurant in Minneapolis.
Though Birk won't comment, it's believed that he and other active players will be pitching in.
Recently, Chiefs offensive tackle Kyle Turley said that he'll donate $25,000 as part of "Gridiron Guardian Sunday," and Not-So-Crazy Joe Davola's contribution has been matched by the likes of John McEnroe, Bob Costas, and Charles Barkley.
Birk's involvement has potential significance that goes well beyond any financial contribution he might make.
A Harvard grad, Birk has been outspoken in the past about the NFL Players Association and, specifically, the leadership provided by executive director Gene Upshaw.
So we've got a feeling that Birk's comments on Tuesday might generate a little controversy.
And we can't wait to hear them.
